I wrote this piece in memory of a dear life-long friend who passed away in April 2020 after a long battle with ALS. The title is from Walt Whitman's poem of the same name which he wrote after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. It is for a large string orchestra. When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd

Opposite to the Revolutionary etude in the previous track, this etude features the fast running passages in the right hand, and powerful chords in the left hand. The motion of the running passages is constantly changing from upwards to downwards, creating a wind whirling effect. This etude is popularly known as the Winter Wind etude, and it uses a big range, spanning the entire keyboard. It is considered one of Chopin's most challenging etudes. By the way, don't be fooled by the beginning, as a few "pianissimo" chords represent the quiet before the storm.

Of 20th-century composers of concert music, Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) left pianists with one of the more substantial bodies of work in traditional showcase formats: five piano concertos and nine piano sonatas, along with suites and other short-form works for solo piano.

In two Jordan Hall concerts, January 28 and February 1,  2016, NEC piano students celebrated Prokofiev's 125th anniversary with performances of all nine sonatas along with other solo piano works.
