To make his latest solo album, 2024’s ‘Flow Critical Lucidity,’ alternative rock vocalist and musician Thurston Moore went to a Swiss writers residence to get into a contemplative headspace. In this exclusive commentary, the Sonic Youth founding member talks about the making of his ninth solo album, which, in his words, is focused on “the power of dreams and the dignity of nature.” On “New in Town,” he focuses on “the spirit of youth and change,” using piano, guitar and electronics. For “Sans Limites,” he collaborated with Lætitia Sadier of Stereolab. The track “We Get High” tells the story of a mountain girl returning home and “The Diver” closes the album with the story of a lost diver in Lake Geneva. In this exclusive commentary, Grammy-nominated English producer Elderbrook celebrates his latest single, “Teardrop,” with a look back at key moments from his career to date. Reflecting on the making of “Teardrop,” Elderbrook says it’s “one of those songs that kind of just clicked. I was drawn to how simple and honest it felt.” The multi-instrumentalist broke out in 2017 with his track “Cola,” and has since collaborated with acts like Diplo and Bob Moses, among others. His 2020 track “Numb” emerged from the loneliness of being on the road, he says, while 2022’s “Howl,” about his young daughter’s late-night restlessness, was part of an entire album he wrote for his kids.
