Mexican-American rock singer Violent Vira drops her long-awaited debut album, ‘Lover of a Ghost.’ In this exclusive commentary, she reflects on the making of key tracks from the project, which arrives four years after her viral single, “I Don’t Care,” a song she recalls was inspired by a creepy internet folk tale. Working with producer Jennifer Decilveo (Hozier, Miley Cyrus), Vira and her band drew from some of her most vulnerable thoughts, from an eating disorder to her mental health struggles. The track “Little Crush” is about how infatuation can be one of the most powerful of emotions — “almost in a monstrous way,” she says. Elsewhere, “Common Decency” is about “the sweet spot in a relationship, right before you say those three magic words,” while the track “Chasing Ghosts” was written at a point in her life she shares was both her lowest and highest.
