Broken Hearts

Sketch owes its name to an afternoon of modular synth sessions meant to be...sketches, short recording exercises and musical tongue twisters. These pre-lockdown takes, pitch shifted into glitchiness and laid down on a sustained groove, found their home in a new arrangement. Compiled in isolation in a dormant San Francisco, Sketch was quickly bounced into a dance tool thought to one day re-open the long-inactive dance-floors.

Following on from his 'Tired Voice' EP Reset Robot returns to Poker Flat Recordings with a new three-tracker entitled Duplicate. 

The man behind the moniker is Dave Robertson, Portsmouth based DJ/producer who has been honing his sound for some time - a perfect blend of crafty house music and slick tech vibes. 

With this EP he flaunts a lot of his signature sound - the title track grooves along nicely around a shuffling beat before building and dropping with maximum effect. 

Hyra has a more classic techno feel, the blippy groove compliments a Detroit-eque pad, before the track locks into its main section accompanied by a wobbly synth. 

Service, the third track sits somewhere in between the two - a thick synth bassline and propulsive rhythm track creating a heavy dance-floor heater.

Exciting UK artist Mallinder is ready to blow in ‘23. Making his debut for Music To Die For with the exquisite ‘Play With Life EP’; a five track body of work which is his first EP release showcasing his varied styles.

Opening with the classically deep house of title track ‘Play With Life’, elements of organic house and deep prog weave themselves into the mix alongside super warm pads which envelope the track, while dreamy synths, off-kilter percussion chimes deliver a uniquely engaging late night, feel good interplay between tension and release. Next up, ‘Risk & Reward’ takes his aesthetic a step further plunging into the liquid cool of hypnotic, warm prog with a tribal edge and pulsating beats and grooves to deliver dancefloor mayhem.

Clouds’ takes you on a much more melodic journey juxtaposing clever drumwork against cascading arps & bleeps, blissful airy pads and heart-pulling strings until a dreamy vocal creeps into the breakdown for an uplifting, joyous encore. ‘Summers Day’ takes things back to square one and heads down a deeper house path with a groovy bassline-driven workout featuring warm keys techy, syncopated percussive drum interplay - a combination which delivers bags of personality.

Finally, ‘Movements’ rounds out the EP with a more mature and uptempo prog sound offering up a more end of the night euphoric journey that leaves you yearning for more.

After acquiring the catalogue of legendary Canadian house label Definitive Recordings earlier in the year, Get Physical Music is proud to present a new various artists series that focuses on some of its most classic cuts. Definitive Classics #001 features newly remastered music from Blunted Dummies, John Acquaviva, Chuck Phulasole and Jetstream.

This cult Canadian label was founded by John Acquaviva, Richard Hawtin, and Karl Kowalski in 1992 as an embodiment of their vision for house music. "Not too hard, not too soft" was the mantra and it built up a fine body of talented artists who made a real impact on the global underground and helped to foment a unique identity for Definitive Recordings. John Acquaviva will continue to A&R for the label and work closely alongside the Get Physical team in this new era. The label's signature sound is showcased here with the first fantastic EP in the new series.

First up is Shawn Caesar and Ty James aka Blunted Dummies' 'House For All' which became an anthem soon after its 1993 release. It's a John Acquaviva edit presented here and is a brilliant raw and deep cut with chunky drums offset by light-emitting chords and a hooky vocal sample that brings a playful touch.

Chuck Phulasole is the pseudonym of Toronto based soul & funk artist John James. He became a mainstay of the label with this house focused project and here his 'Wanna Be With You' sounds as good as ever. It's a jazzed-up and loose-limbed house cut with plenty of US soul, dusty drums and a heart-wrenching vocal over a funky, knotted bassline that cannot fail to make a mark.

Last of all is Jetstream's 'Seriously' which was the first-ever release on the label and the only ever tune that Karl E. Kowalski put out under the alias. It's a superb one, though, that hits hard with driving grooves overlaid with smeared chords. The power of the drums is matched by loopy piano refrains that provide and irresistible emotional release.

This series shines a vital light on what has been a hugely influential label in the history of house music.
