AI Series Mix #006 - THE JAFFA KID

Bristol resident lee makes blissed out/spacey eletro-acid and break-beat driven IDM. His sound is characterised by an unhealthy penchant for Roland TR drum patterns, ethereal pads and tasty acid lines. lee’s tunes owe a great deal to the traditional god-fathers of Braindance but also more recent influences such as Wisp, Microlith and even Burial.

lee received his first break in 2018 with the release of ‘Solace’ on the now defunct Calcul Records. Following this, he became involved in X4 Records with a track included on every VA compilation they have released.

In 2020, lee released his debut album ‘Alcyonian’ on Concrete Collage followed later by the self-released ‘Kindred/Ditty’ single later that year.

A string of releases on other VAs occurred throughout 2020, including tracks on the Five Year Anniversary CD for Evel Records, on the VA for the mysterious Gablonkers collective and on the Creation of a Positron VA for the Bristol-based Sci-Fact label.

In 2022, lee signed-up to put out that notoriously difficult second album on Artificial Intelligence, as well as contributing a track to Artificial Intelligence’s Vol. II. The new album ‘For Emma’ is out on vinyl on Artificial Intelligence on the 30th December.

This podcast showcases lee’s sound over a relatively short four year musical career. lee says “It was fun putting all the tracks I’ve released over the years into one thing. You kind-of forget about tracks once they’re done. It’s strange to think that people might listen to all of it. Well done to any who makes it through to the end, and I hope you enjoyed it!”

Foreign is the pseudonym used by Miguel Vázquez to play sets of IDM and electro sounds, combining the smoothness and efficiency of transparent melodies with abstract landscapes and dense atmospheres loaded with complex polyrhythmic structures.

After some initial years playing in small local clubs, where trance and techno formed the most prominent sound in his sets, it was in mid-2001 when Miguel and Iván Marín created Silverside Collective with the aim of investigating and promoting the most experimental side of electronic music.

At the same time, he started working in the well-known record shop Recycled Music Center in Madrid, run by Dj Yke. This period lasted several years and meant for him a remarkable apprenticeship in all styles of electronic music.

Throughout these years Foreign has played in several events of Hard Taste, A.I. Series and in clubs like NAO, Dub Club, Specka, Graffiti, Shagü Club, etc..

In 2022 he created his own label, Mutoscope Records, mostly oriented to the IDM sound. He's currently preparing his first reference which will be released on vinyl soon.
