The Bad Guys Are Winning!

For the first show of 2022, Carhartt WIP Radio welcomes @dj-spinna-1, the legendary hip hop and deep house innovator from Brooklyn, NYC.

For 30 years Spinna has been a vital part of his hometown’s music legacy. He launched his recording career as a member of the underground hip hop group Jigmastas, before going on to work with the likes of Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch, and De La Soul. In addition, he has made his mark as a solo artist, releasing benchmark albums like “Here to There“ from 2002, as well as countless e.p.’s, compilations and remixes for legends and stars like Donald Byrd, Roy Ayers, Mary J. Blidge, or Steve Wonder.

Since his earliest days, he has been known as an eclectic dj, playing music at the cross-section of hip hop, house, soul, r&b, funk, and jazz. He is also an early proponent of parties dedicated to one artist. His “WONDER-full” DJ nights dedicated to Steve Wonder, and his “Soul Slam” events, better known as the “Michael Jackson VS Prince” parties, became celebrated gatherings all over the USA.
 
For Carhartt WIP Radio DJ Spinna has conducted a mix, which he describes as “time traveling through my early days of underground hip hop with my group Jigmastas and releases from our Beyond Real label, [before] journeying on with some of my earlier remix works and showing my evolution into House Music.”

Sweely comes crashing through the windows of the Distant Hawaii beach house HQ with a humungous, stomping, NY-Jersey inspired EP that combines war drum level percussion with soulfully flowing vocals and lush pads galore.

All The Reasons has done the rounds for a while now and it's an absolute monster. Massive heaving kicks rumble under clattering hats and a soft, woozy pad and hawt-as-hell vocal flourishes.

Following on a similar tip, Around is a more extended affair, morphing from a brooding down-pitched moaner to a arm-throwing, hip-slinging Jersey banger straight outta NYC.

On the flip, Yes He is keeps the New York house vibes flowing on a slightly more low slung tip. One for the slow summer Sunday terrace dance. Lastly, Blue Faces takes a plunge into the deep blue, skin fizzing with the cold caress of salt-water and seaweed on freshly sun-kissed skin. One for the sunset and sea-lovers.

For our first edition of Carhartt WIP Radio in 2020 we warmly welcome back Twit One from Cologne. The producer, dj and Groove Attack record store co-owner is no stranger to our radio program, having already conducted a hip hop show in 2017, consisting of his very own productions under diverse aliases, from Twit One to Tito Wun and Flatpocket as well as collaborations with artists like Flo Mega and Henry Wu.

This time, Twit One introduces Augenringe unter dem dritten Auge Records, abbreviated to A.U.D.D.A., his very own hip hop-and-beyond label. So far his label has featured releases by his long-standing friend Lazy Jones, poet PB Louison, US hip hop producer Kan Kick, Berlin beatsmith Suff Daddy, and other unusual music, like an esoteric swinging ambient tape with yoga instructions, that no other hip hop label would drop. For his Carhartt WIP A.U.D.D.A. Radio show, he has brought some of their music together, to create a musical narrative that also features found spoken word and some yet unfinished, but already thrilling sketches of tunes.

In-between a hectic pre-xmas dj schedule and shortly before his new Testiculo Y Uno album, produced with his friend Hulk Hodn, comes out, Twit One also found some time to chat on the phone with us, giving insight about his label, its philosophy and its future.
