Australian Music Prize-nominated composer Luke Howard has been described as “absolutely heavenly” (Mary Anne Hobbs, BBC Radio 6) and his music as “an ambient masterclass” (Musos’ Guide), but no words can fully capture the potency of Howard’s enthralling compositions. A pianist since childhood, Howard has scored films and performed with artists as diverse as Lior and Jeff Mills, capturing audiences with contemporary classical arrangements that curl and twist around the boundaries of a particular emotion. Though wordless, Howard’s songs perform a function unique to music as a medium – that of evoking without describing, bringing listeners to a feeling which defies articulating. 

Now signed to UK label Mercury KX (Lambert, Olafur Arnalds, Solomon Grey) and joined live by drummer and collaborator Daniel Farrugia, 2017 has Howard working across several projects: arranging the keyboard works of photographer William Eggleston, a pioneer of colour photography; a European tour beginning in the UK and ending with a performance at Germany’s legendary Elbphilharmonie; and a new record. 

Howard is one of Australia’s foremost practitioners of contemporary classical music. Having already accomplished so much and with more on the horizon, he is set to captivate audiences worldwide.

Celebrating Record Store Day and given the occasion of Sólfar EP’s 1st anniversary, Manos Milonakis invites friends, composers and producers to rethink-reimagine its’ 5 tracks. Sólfar EP was Manos’s second solo release, after Your Hand in Mine, which he recorded in Iceland with contribution of local musicians.

Constantly being confronted with these methods of eradication, various bacteria have developed immunities. Should these developments continue, it is presumed that by 2050, 10 mio. people will annually die of infectious diseases, contrasting 700.000 deaths in 2015.

Creepy

“Streifzüge” by Berlin born  artist “Skarú” is an ode to the unique public transport of his home city. Especially the Berlin S-Bahn is connected to a lot of emotions and an always present part in most residents life. Being the place of transition it is amplifying the feeling of anticipation of seeing your friends or going to a club to dance through the night. Still being there the next morning bravely carrying your tired body back to your bed.

„Everything starts with the words: I am – je suis!“

Henning Schmiedt and Marie Séférian, French / German singer of Lebanese descent, team up for a carefully woven, yet fresh and spontaneous collaboration.

Meeting in Henning’s studio Klavierraum in the melting pot Berlin they create this charming post chanson album with a slow music attitude.
Consisting of only first take recordings, it masterfully combines piano, toy piano, harmonium, vocals and electronic textures, resulting in a minimalistic and yet rich and fluid union of sound.

Lyrics are flung into the air like glittering confetti, combining eclectic elements from chanson, Indian vocal scats und jazz with the warmth of the piano and the breathing of the harmonium. The result is a stunning and organic musical interplay.

“Je suis” – I am – everything begins here.

On maison Marie plays a music box that quotes a piece of Henning’s earlier work, nach hause from his release Spazieren, as though to answer and to close the thought’s circle: “I am, I’ve come home.”

Focus on them being empty.
They have to be able absorb things.

Stir at around 80 to 84 BPM.
Make sure to keep this pace up consistently.

WAS HAST DU IN LETZTER ZEIT SO GEMACHT?

Praktischerweise bin ich auf dem Höhepunkt der COVID-19 Pandemie in eine neue Wohnung gezogen.
Da ich derzeit leider keine Stelle bei einer Berliner Filmcrew bekomme, konzentriere ich mich jetzt zunächst darauf, keine Bookings von Berliner Clubs zu erhalten. Der Stillstand kann (uns privilegierten Mitteleuropäer:innen) dabei helfen, neue Wege zu erkunden und alten Müll hinter sich zu lassen.

WAS IST DIE IDEE HINTER DEM MIX?

Der Mix dient zur Entspannung während der Naherholung. Für einen Tag auf dem Balkon oder im Park. Um die Hüften zu lockern und die Nachbarn in Aufregung zu versetzen. 

WAS HAST DU SO DEMNÄCHST GEPLANT?

Meinen Abschlussfilm fertig schneiden. Weiterhin zum massiven Überangebot an Livestream und Podcast-Formaten beitragen. Augen und Ohren offen halten. Soziale Organisationen supporten. Sich gegenseitig bei Projekten/Aktionen unterstützen. Meditieren. Bretter an Wände schrauben und natürlich das Patriarchat zerschlagen.

Wie ein Faultier gelebt. Oft bin ich in der Natur, dabei stets langsam unterwegs, nasche Kräuter und beobachte allerlei Kleingetier. Dann und wann wird musiziert, manchmal aber auch nur herumgesessen und lange geweilt. 

WAS IST DIE IDEE HINTER DEM MIX?

Das Set ist angelehnt an meinen letzten Gig im Mensch Meier, diesen Februar. Bisher gibt es von mir nur verträumte Podcasts für die ruhigen Momente online zu hören. Um zu zeigen was ich im Club so alles spiele, wird es künftig mehr Recordings geben.
