Drops Of Sound Embryos

Originally heard as a solo electronic piece in a Scottish Arts Trust concert in May 2023, "Celestial Objects II" was re-drafted and finalised with a significant organ part made for Lauren Redhead & Alistair Zaldua to perform in a concert during their residency at the 2023 Festival Registri in Venice. Here is their performance on 27 October 2023 featuring the 1745 Nachini organ in the Chiesa Isola di San Servolo.

The electronic part is punctuated by a 'phaser choir' singing short sequences of chords around a powerful 64' reed drone, over which the organ delivers slow-spreading clusters of light.

"Basically I wanted to replicate the sensation of looking at a rotating Chinese vase. You can see the same motives again and again and again, but your perception is always different each time. You may notice a beautiful hidden detail here, a fine line there, then the irregular glazing, perhaps some cracks on the surface, its elegance, its purpose, its age, etc. Maybe you end up contemplating life itself? 
MING is just a "one-bar composition” that Michael Bonaventure repeats using the endless possibilities of the UTOPA organ at the Orgelpark. 
MING refers to the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) but it is also an homage to my dear friend composer Chao-Ming Tung who turned 50 this year." LHY

Written for and Performed by Tre Voci Cello Ensemble at Brunel University.

Sway explores the proximity between two bodies, that of the performer and the cello. As one activates the other, they fall into a dance.
A play on domination- the two bodies shift with ease between the acting driving force and relinquishing control. Acting as choreographic indications for the performer’s body, the movement score takes chladni patterns from the cello range and repurposes them to open, lift and compress the torso. These lead to the activation of new vibrations propagating throughout the body of the cello, pushing through the F hole to merge with the already sounding waves released by the other activated wooden bodies.
The piece ends with the cello being released from the clutches of the dance and returned to its primary state. The performer changes plane, drawing away from the previously occupied space whipping the air, splicing through the weighted dense texture of sound.

This short piece, written for Paul, is composed intuitively, without the use of processes. It reflects an evolution of my musical thinking, or perhaps a return to the way I was composing before I began feeling a need to justify my compositional decisions.

“Unrestricted Music” was written for Paul Evernden and premiered by him at The Old Church, Stoke Newington on 17 September 2019.

Luiz Henrique Yudo (1962 -) is a Dutch/Brazilian composer of Japanese descent. He received his training as an architect at the University of São Paulo (FAU-USP) and later studied at the Nederlandse Film en Televisie Academie in Amsterdam. 
He studied privately with the Brazilian composer Damiano Cozzella and the American composer Tom Johnson. Many of his compositions are strongly inspired by visual associations. He writes scores in which there are aspects left open to the musicians in order to create an individual interpretation. Performers of his music are therefore invited to play a very active role in the creative process.
