For my DJ mix, I chose the theme of female rappers in southern hip-hop/crunk music, limited to between the years 1997-2004 due to its distinctive sound. As you listen to this mix, pay attention to the similarities in lyrical style and diction among the female MC's. There is something unique to the vocal quality of southern female rappers that only adds to their inherently badass delivery. And in a male-dominated industry, these gangsta ladies hold their own against their male counterparts, threatening violence such as the Ms. B track Bottle Action, or shifting the center of sexual objectification from women to men, such as the La' Chat track Slob On My Cat. Production is also representative of much of classic southern hip-hop, with minor synths and the dominate 808 kicks, snares, and hi-hats. I hope you enjoy this interesting musical journey...
