He learned his craft while working in record stores and for a record company during the day and singing in bars and clubs at night.

Luke began as a solo performer, then joined his brother Pearse to form “The Coleman Brothers”.  This harmony duo proved very successful, releasing a single on R.C.A. Records in 1980, touring South East Asia, and performing around Sydney, and the Australian Cabaret Circuit.

The need to explore and develop as an individual performer led to Luke going out as a solo act again and experimenting with different genres of music. This included working with a harmony trio (LPG) to country-rock and rock n’ roll bands.  At the same time he studied acting, appeared in several TV commercials and took to the “catwalk” as a male model.

In 1986 he formed the Sydney City Swing Band, a six piece swing and rhythm & blues outfit with Luke as the front-man and singer.  The band received wide acclaim around town and performed in numerous venues in Sydney including the prestigious Don Burrows Supper Club at the Regent International Hotel.

It was around this time that Luke began serious voice training with Don Grayden (author of The Mind Behind The Voice) and studied dance with Greg Radford (choreographer).  Broadening his horizons, Luke began auditioning for musicals as well as enhancing his work experience by performing on cruise ships as an entertainer and also as Assistant Cruise Director on the P&O Ship “Fairstar”.

In the late 80’s Luke blossomed as a songwriter, having studied the craft at length in workshops with Tom Price (an established songwriter from the USA). As a result of his commitment to the art and involvement with songwriters he was elected inaugural President of “The Society of Australian Songwriters”. 

In order to showcase his talents as a songwriter, Luke recorded the album “I’ll Be Around” which was a culmination of his various musical influences and styles.




A successful residency in the Americas Cup Bar at the Sydney Hilton which was followed by an extended residency at famous Observer Hotel in ‘The Rocks’, kept Luke’s solo performance honed in the 80’s and early 90’s.

In 1992 Luke Coleman was honoured by the Australian Entertainment Industry when he was nominated for a “Mo Award” as Best Solo Act in the field of variety entertainment.

“Gladbag for a Suitcase” was the song that Luke wrote that was featured in an advertising campaign in 1993 for the Sydney City Mission, a charity for the homeless.  The song was played on radio and television throughout the country.  

This was also the year that Luke Coleman ventured into the world to discover new audiences and challenges on the World Stage.  Landing in London Luke met with some encouragement as can be seen by the following review in the Stage Newspaper 10/3/94 :

“He is a stylish clean-cut looking singer... who is particularly suited to better class cabaret dates and would neatly fit into those slots on Radio 2, either singing with a big band or generally singing standards...” 

This prediction came to fruition in November 1996 when Luke performed two original songs that were broadcast on BBC Radio 2 and recorded live at the prestigious Green Room in the Cafe Royal.

Based in London, Luke became actively involved in entertainment management and performed regularly in various venues around London and Europe, from pubs to clubs, restaurants to ships, to Five Star Hotels and corporate events.  He also took the opportunity to do courses in radio and television presenting.

In 2002 this well rounded and versatile, international performer has returned to Sydney after 9 years on the World Stage.
