After the album Bach, Little Books, harpsichordist Francesco Corti continues his collaboration with Arcana with a 2-CD recording entirely dedicated to George Frideric Handel. At the center of the project are the eight “Great” suites. These masterpieces were the composer’s first published set, and are a clear testimony to his virtuosity at the keyboard. Their characteristically diversified styles reflect not only the mélange of national traditions assimilated by the young composer, but also his phenomenal improvisatory talent. Moreover, the attraction of these pieces lies in their melodic and rhythmic affinity to the world of singing and orchestral writing, Händel’s strongest interests. 
Arrangements of Handel’s operatic overtures and arias started circulating early in his career in England, and in his later years he was known to perform his overtures on the keyboard himself. Corti designs a program showcasing the composer’s brilliant treatment of the instrument, choosing to complement the “Great” Suites with a selection of transcriptions from Händel’s own hand and from his close musical circle.

Après l’album Bach, Little Books, le claveciniste Francesco Corti poursuit sa collaboration avec le label Arcana avec un double album entièrement consacré à Georg Friedrich Haendel. Au cœur du projet, les huit « Grandes Suites ». Ces chefs-d’œuvre constituent le premier recueil publié du compositeur et témoignent de sa virtuosité au clavier. Leur diversité caractéristique de styles reflète non seulement le mélange des traditions nationales intégrées par le jeune compositeur, mais aussi son phénoménal talent d’improvisateur. L’intérêt de ces pièces réside également dans leur affinité mélodique et rythmique avec les idiomes du chant et de l’écriture orchestrale, pour lesquels Händel nourrissait un intérêt particulièrement marqué. Des arrangements d’ouvertures et d’airs d’opéra circulèrent dès le début de sa carrière en Angleterre et, dans ses dernières années, il était connu pour interpréter lui-même ses ouvertures au clavier. Corti a conçu un programme mettant en valeur le brillant traitement de l’instrument par le compositeur et a choisi de compléter ces « Grandes Suites » par une série de transcriptions réalisées par Händel lui-même et par son propre cercle musical.

El Ujanco, Creature of 365 eyes
Deep in the forest of Izurtza, where the oaks whisper ancient secrets and the mists coil like wise serpents, lives a being that no one has seen twice with the same face: El Ujanco, the Guardian of the Days.
It has 365 eyes, one for each day of the year. Each eye is different: some shine like the August sun, others cry like November rain. Every day, at dawn, one of his eyes goes out and falls to the ground like a dry leaf. The villagers say that if you meet one, you can see the past of that day as if you were reliving it.
But El Ujanco is not eternal. On the last night of the year, when the sky is full of trembling stars and humans celebrate without knowing what is lurking, El Ujanco rises. His dimmed eyes suddenly light up, and his body turns into a shooting star that crosses the firmament. Whoever sees it, according to legend, receives a whisper in the soul: a promise, a memory, or a warning.
They say that the first calendar carved in stone was born by the ancient farmers, when time still had no name. Others say that he is the son of the Moon and the Sun, destined to watch the balance between light and shadow, between what was and what will be.
Every year, when returning to earth, El Ujanco hides in a new cave, in a new forest, in a new corner of the Basque Country. Only children, poets and fools can feel his presence. And if you hear him muttering, don't be afraid: he's counting the days you still have left, so you can live them with purpose.

The mazurka was a popular dance in the 19th century.  Its popularity stretched beyond Poland’s borders, eastward and westward.  Leo Tolstoy, for example in War and Peace as well as Anna Karenina, brings the mazurka in play to give a deeper color in settings when man and woman meet, are fascinated by each other, feel mutually attracted.  Also in Paris, where Chopin lived, the mazurka – together with Polonaise – was quite fashionable within the aristocracy.  The inflow of many Poles, fleeing the Russian invasion in Poland in 1831, certainly intensified this.  The Poles where regarded in Paris as akin to the Orient.  As William Atwood writes, people in Paris “saw Oriental faces and Asiatic outfits when looking at the Poles.  They imagined Poland as a land shrouded in Oriental exoticism and peopled by a race of Tartars whose ancestors rode across the steppes of Asia with Genghis Khan and Tamerlane.”  Exotic, indeed.

The fourth mazurka is very short and seems without an end.  It is sketchy.  Huneker says: “The harmonies are closer and there is sorrow abroad.  The incessant circling around one idea, as if obsessed by fixed grief, is used here for the first, but not for the last time by Chopin.”
