Behold is the first single from the album “The Unseen”. The album is a collection of faith centred songs some of which are specifically for a congregational church setting. 

“Behold” draws directly from book 21 of Revelation in presenting the beautiful hope of God’s place being with man in the new heaven and earth. This has always been a deeply moving chapter for me. 

I remember completely breaking up as I read these beautiful words in a group devotional I was leading. Someone came up afterwards to ask if I had stuff going on and I laughed and said “No mate, those words are just so beautiful and encouraging”. 

For me Behold is about the only true “happily ever after” at the end of the story and I’m excited to be releasing it as the first song from this album.

“The Unseen” album has been strongly influenced by the work of Dr Michael S Heiser, particularly his book “The Unseen Realm”. Major ideas in this work include human worth as those made in the image of God, a loving Father’s mission over millennia to be reunited with his human family and the depth and fullness of Christ’s finished work. 

When I write music for a church setting or music in general, the themes and ideas have to be authentic to me personally. I have to feel honest singing them. In a church setting, the challenge is to convey those deep lyric concepts in a musically accessible way. But when people talk to me about these songs I am always reminded that the beautiful thing about lyrics is that everyone has their own unique revelation when they hear and sing it.

Hallowed is the second single from the album The Unseen, a collection of faith-centred songs by Gold Coast songwriter and music producer Luke Garfield.

Above All Things is the third single from the album The Unseen, a collection of faith-centred songs by Gold Coast songwriter and music producer Luke Garfield.

Garfield is a seasoned songwriter and music producer having spent time in Nashville honing his skills recording other artists. He is continually writing and recording new material at Banana Llama Studios, located on the Gold Coast, Australia.

Above All Things was a song that Garfield wanted to write after listening to a podcast interview. The person being interviewed was talking about a phrase from Colossians in the Bible speaking of Jesus:

“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.”

Garfield says:

“The phrase ‘created through him and for him’ really hit home like never before. All that was created good and pure was through Jesus and for him. 

That might offend some people who think Jesus is sounding like a Greek or Roman type god who is greedy and wants everything for himself, but to me those words are wonderfully rich and deep when you understand who Jesus is. 

When you read that in context of Jesus coming to seek and save the lost. When you read it knowing that Jesus says if I set you free, you are free indeed. Then you start to understand that this wayward world was never meant to look the way it does and God had a plan to make it right in Jesus. Most of all, Jesus cares about us because we were made through him and for him - we are dear to him.” 

From that kernel of an idea Garfield started to take the rest of the first chapter of Colossians and formed the lyrics for the song Above All Things. One of the earlier songs written for The Unseen album, Above All Things has found a regular home as a live worship song in his local church for the last 4 years.

One other unique aspect of this release is the synesthetic artwork for the song. It was painted by friend and fellow musician Fear of Flight (Aaron Shipway) who has an amazing gift of seeing the music he hears. Garfield is filming a mini-documentary to explore synesthesia and the music of The Unseen album to be released later in 2022.

As a composer, Garfield writes music for a wide range of genres including alternative rock, indie electronic and songs for a church setting.

Every Knee is the fifth single from The Unseen album, a collection of songs about rebellion and restoration. 

I wrote 'Every Knee' one sunny afternoon in 2014 while my kids were playing in the backyard. As a father of 5 (four in 2014), your time is shared between a lot of important people. So time to write songs needs to be grabbed when you can. Songwriting isn’t always about waiting for the inspiration to strike. Sometimes you’ve just got to take what time you can get in the midst of the busyness of life and write. 

Every Knee was a song like this and it came together over an hour or so one afternoon while my kids were playing around me in the backyard. 

Thematically, the thrust of this song is found in its first two words, “It’s simple”. The Christian life and truths are inherently simple. A saving faith in Jesus should be as easy for a child to grasp hold of and believe as it should be for a theologian. At the same time Jesus, who he is and the victory he’s won, is incredibly deep theologically as well as having amazing cosmological implications. This song tries to capture both this simplicity as well as the depth. 

Musically this song has a bit more 'rock' in it and departs from the slower ballad-like sounds on the album. I joke about this being my 'what if the Foo Fighters wrote worship music' song. 'Every Knee' has been sung in our local church for the last 8 years so I'm excited to finally have a version of the song to share with everyone.

More Than Conquerors is the 6th single from The Unseen album, a collection of songs about rebellion and restoration by Gold Coast songwriter and music producer Luke Garfield.

More Than Conquerors started as a song over 22 years ago.
 
“More Than Conquerors was a song I wrote to play at a youth camp I was a leader at. I had never written a worship song so I thought I’d try writing one for us to sing at the camp” he says.

“The song I’m releasing now is sort of half of the song that was written back then. When I started writing songs for The Unseen album project I’d always liked the music and lyrics of More Than Conquerors but I realised I had forgotten parts of it.”
 
“I could remember the first verse and the chorus but the rest was lost to time.” Garfield says.
 
“There was never a second verse so I needed to write the lyrics for it. These are some of my favourite lyrics in the song now. I also had to come up with a bridge section to help it feel balanced.

“It’s a bit of a departure musically from the sound of the other songs on the album but I really love the uplifting sound and theme of the song. When we sing this song at my church it’s such a celebration”, says Garfield.

More Than Conquerors draws thematically from the letter of Paul to the Romans. In this letter he describes believers as “more than conquerors through him who loved us”. The song draws out how truly wonderful the gospel message is by highlighting the intimate language the Father and Son use of believers. Jesus calls us brothers and his friend. God calls us his very sons, not in gender terms, but in terms of the amazing inheritance we have in faith because of Jesus’ finished work.

The lyrics and groove of this song gives believers plenty of reasons to remember and celebrate their conquering King and the faith they have in Him. At the same time, it reminds them that this is just a taste of the things to come in the new heaven and earth.

Yes You Are is the 7th song from The Unseen album, a collection of songs about rebellion and restoration by Gold Coast songwriter and music producer Luke Garfield.

Yes You Are was one of the earliest songs written for The Unseen and employs a type of wordplay in the lyrics used by biblical writers.
 
“Yeshua is one of the traditional Hebrew renditions of the name Jesus” he says.

“In the bible, the writers will often take words that sound like other words and play with them to include deeper meaning to readers who understand the original language. In modern times, puns are an example of this type of wordplay.”
 
“The main hook of the song is ‘Yes You are’. As I am singing truths about the Godhead I am affirming it with the words ‘Yes You are’ after each statement. The words “Yes You are” also sound like the Hebrew name of Jesus, Yeshua” Garfield says.
 
“I’m not trying to be humorous, I’m trying to draw out a double meaning about the divinity of Jesus. I’m also creating a space for fluidity in the lyrics so people can sing ‘Yes You are’ or ‘Yeshua’ in a worship setting”.

Musically, Yes You Are has a distinctly cinematic atmosphere through the use of ethnic percussion and ethereal voices. The song seems to embody the enigmatic mystery of the Godhead as well as the grand beauty of the gospel.

Luke Garfield's "Fear Is A Liar" is the 8th release from his album "The Unseen". The song features a stripped-back acoustic sound with beautiful backing vocals by Tracey Sahayam.

The song deals with the theme of anxious fear by personifying it, showing how it can become an unwelcome guest in a person's life. The chorus of the song is an anthem of freedom and declares that Jesus is the one who truly sets us free from even the most insidious fears. When we abide in intimacy with God and his love, fear gets kicked out the door and has it firmly slammed in it's face.

The core theme of the lyrics are taken from 1 John 4:18, "There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear."

Whiskey Bottle Dawn is a royalty free spaghetti western song which features expressive resonator slide guitar. It creates a very authentic western movie feel with it's gritty melancholy sound similar to music composed by Ennio Morricone and more recently from videos games like Red Dead Redemption.

I started composing this tune when on a weekend away with my wife at a cool Air BnB in the mountains outside of Murwillumbah, NSW. I took my relatively new Gretch Alligator resonator guitar with us and spent some of the time working on some ideas in the tuning of Gm. Whiskey Bottle Dawn came out of that time away.
