DJ T-1000 joins for DifferentSound Podcast #154.

Detroit-born, Berlin-based Alan D. Oldham has been called "Detroit Techno's Renaissance Man" by Muzik Magazine (UK). Electronic musician, label owner, remixer, graphic illustrator, and international DJ, Oldham-under his stage name DJ T-1000-does it all. A lifelong cartoonist and graphic designer, a young Oldham published his own indie comic book "Johnny Gambit" in 1987 to local notoriety. Hired that same year by his childhood friend Derrick May to illustrate several memorable pieces for his new Transmat label, this led to Oldham's very first involvement in the fledgling techno scene. More art requests quickly followed, most famously from the Djax-Up-Beats label (NL), where his art took center stage for many years (the lone EP that Oldham produced for Djax, under the name Signal To Noise Ratio, brought home a 1991 Detroit Metro Times Music Award for best single in "Detroit Is Burning"). At the same time, college-student Oldham was hired at local radio station WDET, hosting Detroit's first-ever all-electronic radio program, "Fast Forward," introducing artists like UR, Richie Hawtin and Carl Craig to local airwaves.When he's not behind the decks or in the studio producing electronic dance music for labels like Tresor Berlin, Inzec (CH), Minimalsoul (CH), or his own Pure Sonik and Generator imprints, Oldham has provided artwork for the electronic music industry for almost 20 years. Also, his drawings and large-scale paintings have been on display in art galleries in Chicago, Berlin, Paris, Los Angeles, and most recently a sold-out opening in Amsterdam.

This year, the spanish techno legend Oscar Mulero will return to the stage at rural, and we are happy to share the recording of his closing set at “rural at New Acao” in 2022.

This three-hour raging techno set guided the audience to the most intense and deeper world in the otherworldly main floor of “New Acao”, a gorgeous Showa-era building overlooking the sea.

Underground Resistance out of Detroit. 

Most of what we think of as "techno" came directly from them. It's hard to think of a more influential, more powerful collective in all of electronic music.

Making music since 1990, a group of young men in Detroit picked up musical instruments, rudimentary drum machines, and early computer technology and fused it with an independent and political ethos that defines the genre to this day.

But the story doesn't stop there.

Alan Oldham a.k.a. DJ T-1000 (like the rest of UR) grew up in Detroit and was the collective's primary visual communicator - making art, logos, record covers for not just his own crew but also for Miss Djax and Djax-Up-Beats among many others. As Jeff Mills and Robert Hood stepped farther away from the crew due to increased demands from solo careers, Mr. Oldham became the crew's primary DJ, playing records on Detroit's WDET-FM. His own productions and releases increased in volume and influence, and by the late 90s he was releasing and playing regularly for Tresor in Berlin.

This 'Detroit to Berlin connection' cannot be overstated in terms of influence.

Mr. Oldham began to use Berlin as a base around a decade ago, and he tours and releases regularly - bringing authentic techno sounds and ideas to new generations of people. We were honored to have him in the THF Radio studio booth, playing some classic tracks along with some of his unreleased techno and electro productions.

THROWBACK: Jeff Mills — Essential Mix @ BBC Radio 1 — 07.06.1998

From cult local beginnings on the Berlin circuit, Rødhåd is now very much part of the global DJ highway. What initially turned heads was his ability to hold down long and hypnotic sets of loopy, moody house and techno all masterfully mixed in immersive ways. His productions, too, mixed sparse ambient designs with rolling techno grooves on labels like Dystopian and Token, and just this month he put out his debut album, Anxious. It’s a filmic meditation on beautifully bleak and eerie sounds and is another reason we love the man after he turned in a memorable closing set on our UFO stage at this year’s Dekmantel Festival. 

Over a ninety minute live mix recorded recently, he gets more energised with plenty of hurried techno and urgent synth lines all tightly weaving round each other. It’s a high pressure and enchantingly linear set that touches on Millsian space vibes, industrialism and unhinged apocalypse music in one smoothly mixed and sequenced session that will leave you out of breath.
