The Stranded FM mainstay and former Cultfarm resident has been a notable figure in the local music scene for years, and has shared his love of obscure synth gems and wild rhythms anywhere from SoHaSo nights to Dekmantel Selectors. For his entry into our podcast series, Luke delivers a meticulously crafted showcase of his deeper, more hypnotic side. There's much to discover here, from the beautiful blends to the little details in the selections. Throughout this mix, a snippet of guitar or a loosely played cymbal will catch your ear, while the rhythms underneath shift and shuffle uneasily, keeping you on your toes for the duration. Just beautiful.

The first release on aural conduct comes from Nijhof & Toonk. Growing up together in the nineties, their vibrant friendship has been marked by a mutual drive to create. Since they both primarily work in visual and interdisciplinary arts, their music has only occasionally been shared with others. 

This record is the culmination of their multi-year, synchronous work. One can hear clever electronics fuelled by post-rock and dub-laden styles, breathing improvisationalist technique as much as studied precision and composition. Their lingering music draws us into a sonic zone, where our consecutive emotions are quickly eclipsed while time proceeds in an altered fashion. Listen attentively.

Salutingrome graces the second chapter of aural conduct. On ‘Washing Hands’ a few of the artist’s finest crafts and outtakes are assembled, intuitive lyrical music that appeared shrouded in mystery on the internet in recent years. 

The moniker came to life as the aperture for the characteristic experiments written by Zamity Mitelembe. Echoing his activity in theatre, these modernistic tracks express solitude and transgression. Swindling stairwells and winter nights – immerse yourself in an ode to the season of ice and distance.

For the next episode of Knekelhuis we've invited Utrecht based, but intergalactic in his mind, Luke Cohlen. We know Luke as a key player in the Dom city underground scene, not only as a stand-out DJ and fanatic digger, but as a pusher of Stranded FM and core member of the intimate electronic music collective Cultfarm.  His sets always present a signature style - rhythmic, trippy, and evocative. For our 60th episode Luke prepared a raw and autonomous mix, interpreting the ethos of Knekelhuis. By playing looming and twisted electronics that he finds a perfect fit with the label. A blend of spoken word and fine  intersections between wave, post-punk, dub and electro, that he holds so dear.

sandstorms in the otherworld where broken branches cry out loud – a megalomaniac orchestra voicing the flux of conflict – falling debris of an electronic past with chorals in reverse and sines turning saws. 

this mixtape turned out a damn freakshow – layering amongst others Miso Ensemble, Fred Frith, Christian Clozier, DJ Donotask and the inimitable Pauline Oliveros, who won the Gaudeamus award with this choral piece — Sound Patterns — in 1962. her being in Utrecht, that thought. historical legacy.
