Rain without words

October 2013 will see the reissue of 26-year old American composer Peter Broderick's 2008 debut album Float. Returning to his home in Oregon, where his musical journey began, Peter completes the circle with the release of Float 2013. Remastered by the gifted hands of Nils Frahm, Float 2013 will also include two additional bonus tracks with each album download and will be reissued on CD, vinyl, digital and even on a limited edition cassette via Erased Tapes. The album release will also be accompanied by Float 2013 Addendum, a 7” single featuring ‘Something Has Changed’ re-arranged as a duet for violin and viola, with the new title ‘Something Has Remained’.

Brought up in a musical household in Oregon, Peter quickly became a popular session musician for the likes of M. Ward in the Portland area. Later discovered by the Danish band Efterklang he joined their live band and spent the next six years based in Europe where he collaborated with many like-minded contemporaries. Through relentless touring, multiple album recordings and film scores Peter has established himself as a solo artist, known for his innate gift as a musical medium to picking up any instrument, turning his musings into poignant songs.

Having previously released ‘Ten Duets‘ on cassette tape, Peter is a big fan of this format and is excited to be taking part in Cassette Store Day on September 7th 2013. Float 2013 will be available in store in a hand numbered limited edition of purple cassettes in bespoke packaging. ’A dialogue was started with Robert, about the idea of one day giving Float a second chance. And a bit later I found myself in the studio of my dear friend Nils, remastering these songs which on one hand felt so far away, but on the other felt right at the core of my musical heart, the foundation of my aspirations as a musician. Decision

We bring you this remix, inspired by the beautiful memories of a time when music was truly listened to and felt. This track was one of the first electronic songs that ever captured my heart, and that’s why it remains so special to me, it takes me back to those days when I was just a happy kid, carefree and full of joy. There’s something so pure about the coherence between feeling and thought that we experience in our youth, before life’s worries set in. Let’s not allow that essence to be lost! I hope you enjoy!

This year has been one of great loss for so many, and collectively. 

Especially the people we love, or our ability to connect with them. And as a culture we tend to want to minimize loss, to gloss over it, to be positive and say “well, it’s ok because...”

Or in my case, when I lose someone I love, I want to pick apart “what happened” and understand every aspect of how things unfolded so that I can make damn sure it never happens again. 

In these last several months since my ex and I separated, I have thought hundreds of hours about what I could have done differently, better, or more lovingly to avoid this pain. But the truth is that I did the best I could with the awareness and knowledge I had at the time. 

That’s what we all do in life. The best we can with what we’ve got.

So when we finally give up the story that there was some other way it could have been, all there is to do is take our lessons forward and confront the loss — and the pain.

There is no explanation that will make me miss her less. When we truly love someone and we lose them, there is no avoiding the hurt, the heartache, and the grief. And our distractions just prolong and deepen the suffering.

When we understand that, we see that our choice is simple: face the pain, embrace it as an expression of our love for them, and let the pain break open our hearts again so that love can enter once more.

So not only is it ok to think, “I miss you.” It’s beautiful, and it’s medicine if you let it be. 

Because heartbreak and grief is just love in drag.
