The Immortals become mortal and dance with death. Sound as liminal agent, summons a weightless existence where the disembodied revel with transfigured spectral gestures momentarily relieved from earth bound duties. 

What is the significance of similarities and coincidences? Are they rebuses of memory, delusions of the self and the senses, or schemes and symptoms of an order underlying the chaos of human relationships that applies equally to living and dead?

The Transmigration compilation navigates a fragmented world that is constricted by miotic idealism and obscured with self-reflexive references that have calcified into new standards and paradigms. Sounds that both echo and refuse, sometimes dissolving into mystic contemplation, at other times hatching new foundations or simply melting minds to make matter better(or worse).
The collection of pieces is from artists, devoted expeimenters, whose timeless explorations inspire and consider the constant revival and perpetual change of meaning - we join them as they are unafraid to plunge into fire without phoenix.

019 signals the end of an era for LFI, eternal thanks and gratitude to all who contributed and listened over the 7 or so years. Giving time and space - hours on end, guest mixes, submissions, Red Light Radio, audio tweaks, shonky mails, backspace, showcase, table top meetings, splayed desktop, late nights... Big love and big dreams, good night.

The first of the LFI spotlight series looks at spaces that have brilliant natural acoustics. Recordings made underground, in tunnels or underwater; the spatial co-ordinates of otherness. 

Bernie Krause a musician, soundscape recorder and founder of the Wild Sanctuary,  said "The prime goal of any recording is the creation of an illusion that creates an honest sense of space". The synthetic mimicry of resonance artificially created by masters of the studio such as Lee Perry, Joe Meek and Phil Spector contradicts Krause's statement, as they summon fantastical realms, in search of better worlds .  We move away from the beaten track,  turning our ears towards what lies outside of the idealised studio space. Here we find sonic beauty in subterranean locations where earthly nature is suspended and time appears fragmented. 

Recordings from the underground make manifest a world where fear of the unknown gains momentum. The echoing chamber causes a sensory shift that pierces the static quotidian grid. This new sonic field gives life to the otherwise inanimate sound object. Formerly used as a currency, it's reincarnation disorientates the listener as one is unable to make a direct link between the sound and its sources.

The mix begins and ends with Walter Marchetti's-'Per La Sete Dell'orecchio' (For The Thirsty Ears) released in 1984. We hear rocks being dropped into a well, from this minimal gesture a maximal output is achieved as the echo envelops the listener, "turning sound into a sculpture, making material and dimensional it's reverberating presence".  This recording exemplifies technology being used as an extension of the human body, distorting our perceptions to create a constant battle between natural acoustic space and the virtual acoustic space.  This tug of war ends when the rope dissolves over long periods of time. 

Michel Redolfi hangs microphones underwater, leaving them there for years at a time to record the natural sounds before adding processed field recordings and synthesised sounds. Not only does Michel explore the natural acoustics of his chosen environment he explores technical manipulation and the virtual space, merging technology and the natural world together as one inseparable universe. 

The Deep Listening Band reverse our confusing experience of technology. They recorded in Fort Worden Cistern, Washington in 1988. The cistern is 14 feet deep with a diameter of 186 feet, it once held 2 million gallons of water. The natural acoustics of the space had a huge 45 second reverberation time. Panaiotis, one quarter of band said "the space is real, and unique. It is impossible to tell where the performer stops and the reverberation takes over". The instruments are played without any electronic processing, in the cistern one creates an unpredictable aural experience in which sound waves are constantly interacting to either diminish or amplify their initial effect, creating haunting tonalities.

This weeks guest mix is from Italian come Berlin musician Carlo Maria. Before relocating he spent time studying sound in Cuneo, Bologna and at the Institute of Sonology in The Hague. A main inspiration for his current sonic research is the feedback process between humans and machines in music making. As a result of this and failed attempts to produce functional music, he released his first EP “Subject to Drift” on SØVN records (May, 2016) followed by the brooding “Kenk!” (August, 2017) on the polish label Brutaż.

Since 2017 he has been one half of Punctum, a collaborative project with Caterina Barbieri. Punctum’s debut album “Remote Sensing” (May, 2017) has been released on Berlin’s imprint SUMME and presented live at Nowhere Festival (IT) and The Long Now, MaerzMusik (DE). He joins us with a live set at arkaoda Berlin for Yasuo Sugibayashi & Tako & Izabel & Carlo Maria on the 14th of April.
