Novembre 2018 sur l’archipel de Wakatobi en Indonésie, une baleine de 10 mètres de long s’échoue sur la plage. 6 kilos de plastique sont retrouvés dans son estomac. Mars 2019, sur la plage de Mabini aux Philippines, 40 kilos de plastique sont extraits de l’estomac d’un cétacé de 5 mètres de long. Avril 2019, sur une plage de Sardaigne, 22 kilos de plastique sont récupérés dans l’estomac d’un cachalot de 8 mètres de long. Décembre 2019 sur l’île d’Harris en Ecosse, un record… Les scientifiques trouvent une boule de 100 kilos de plastique dans l’estomac du mammifère échoué.

Liste non exhaustive des déchets retrouvés : gants, pailles en plastique, paquets de pâtes, sacs de riz, de chips, emballages alimentaires divers, sacs utilisés dans les plantations de bananes, ballons, bâches, filets de pêche, corde, gobelets en plastique, cotons-tiges…
