The Hidden Grasses

A few nights ago I took a moment to soak my eyes in the Moon's glow, and before I knew it, I was deeply invigorated and this song was practically writing itself. I've been existing nocturnally since then, dialing in countless thousands of digital brushstrokes to this silver stereophonic rainbow. I included some soul-soothing vocals and violin recordings from Madelion Moondrop﻿, as well as some of my own vocals, and a whole lot of delicate percussion made from sounds recorded in the mountains here in Colorado.

This piece got me thinking about musical space in a very interesting way. I spent a good portion of the process rhythmically slicing up some of the atmospheric and textural layers to interact in various ways with the percussion, envisioning the percussion as tree limbs and the diced up chords as the beams of iridescent moonlight that they split.

This morning, at the same moment I was listening to the finished file for the first time, the sun began coming over the horizon. That kind of thing has a way of putting a smile on my face.

Naturally, it seems very fitting to me that I should make it available to you while the Moon is in the phase that she's in, since I feel that for best results, one should consider listening while appreciating her ethereal splendor. :)

Uplifting, emotive, and impassioned - Soulular's third EP released via Gravitas Recordings, "Heartblast", is an admirable exhibition of what bass music can be. Each song is a perfectly crafted blend of both beauty and groove, lending themselves as the soundtrack to both late night and early morning atmospheres. Always one to push his own boundaries, Jeff Laos shows off his years of study and practice throughout the seven track free/pay-what-you-want album.

Starting strong, "Heartblaster" combines chopped vocals and a retro lead into a soothing yet bouncy package. "Touch" goes a bit deeper, boasting meticulous, psychedelic sound design. The rigid basslines in both "Existence" and "Icaro" give each track a hype feel without subtracting from the melodic elegance. Closing out the album is "Believer", a sultry tune filled with swaying arpeggiation and supple synth work.

Seductive and whimsical, Perkulat0r's debut release "Transcension", released on Gravitas Recordings, is quite a special conception. As the winner of last year's Minnesota remix contest, this young producer has set the bar high with every deep, textured song he's devised.
