Stephen Bishop is behind the Opal Tapes empire of cassette oriented outings and the musical personality BASIC HOUSE, and he performs Thursday, May 28 @ the MAC.  Not coincidentally, MUTEK hosts several Opal Tapes artists this year, including KAREN GWYER (on Friday, May 29), and PERFUME ADVERT (Sunday, May 31). Lumisokea is a Belgian-Italian duo, formed by Koenraad Ecker and Andrea Taeggi, both based in Berlin.
 Their music music can be described as being highly tactile, rich in texture and polyrhythmic, using both acoustic and electronic means to create a challenging and introspective listening experience.
 Lumisokea’s influences range from dub to musique concrète, various percussion music traditions from Asia & Africa, techno, noise and contemporary classical music, while remaining focused on the key elements in their music : to induce trance-like states, to move bodies and to emphasize the tactile qualities of sound.
In the past, Lumisokea have released on Opal Tapes and Eat Concrete and have contributed to compilations on Digitalis and Crash Symbols. 
There are 2 upcoming releases : one is an album on Luke Younger's (aka Helm) Alter label. It's nocturnal, oneiric, slow-burning music that has been a very long time in the making and will be out soon finally. 
The second upcoming release, to be released on Opal Tapes later this year, is a continuation of our work on "Eavesdropping on Pianists" : delving deeper into our fascination with polyrhythms,  using the recordings we made of Vladimir Popov's "noise instruments" as the basic sound palette.

To mark the end of the 1 year residency at Space in London since Feb 2012, Power Station is a free download release by Shelley Parker. The residency has largely been inspired by Dungeness Power Station in Kent. The outcomes of this residency during the past year have resulted in spatial recordings from the power station translated in to 2 new compositions, a film (screened at Supernormal Festival (August 2012), a sound installation and a performance (July 2012).

CURRENT (March 2012) Current is a composition of site specific field recordings sourced at Dungeness Power Station focusing on the 200 HZ low hum of electricity resonating from the substation and the static hiss of pylons. The track is interrupted with a live recording of the audio files transfer from the sound recorder transforming the track into a live circuit of the site specific recording process. Equally Current draws influences from the physicality of the power station’s penetrating sound and it’s sonic similarity to the experiential impact of purpose built machine made music played through a large club sound system.

WHITE BUILDING (July 2012) Current was presented as a live improvisation of the field recordings sourced at Dungeness Power Station and incorporated a live contact mic on the sub bass monitor feeding back to the desk. Constructed from an ambisonic recording of this performance, WHITE BUILDING investigates the potential for bass to operate as a feral frequency within a live, improvised and architectural context. The project also sets out to examine the relationship between the decommissioned substation at Dungeness and it’s existing sonic heritage as a now defunct architectural artefact.

Their music is at once highly physical and rich in texture, using both acoustic (cello, prepared piano) as well as  (analog) electronic instruments to create a dark and introspective listening experience. Their influences range from dub to noise, bassmusic, techno, musique concrète and contemporary classical music, while remaining focused on the key elements in their music : to induce trance-like states, to move bodies and to emphasize the tactile qualities of sound.

To strengthen the impact and concentration of their live-shows, Lumisokea have created a visual side to their musical performances together with Yannick Jacquet (Legoman), a well-respected video-artist, known a.o. from his work as a founding member of the antiVJ visual label.

The visuals and scenography that Yannick Jacquet designed for Lumisokea are based around the simple but highly effective idea of projecting slowly developing, abstract geometrical beams of light into a pitch black room filled with smoke. In contrast to most visuals used at musical performances, these moving shapes do not seek to add a certain meaning or concrete imagery to Lumisokea’s music. They rather function as a hypnotic focal point and a way to relieve the audience from the boundaries of the performance space, made possible through the use of the tactile and illusory qualities of light projected onto smoke. 

In fall 2012 Lumisokea will release their second album on Eat Concrete, entitled “Selva”, following their well-received debut album “Automatons” (2011).
