V's Breaking Things | Mixpub radio

When Nadeem from Sub-Label Records asked me to provide him with a progressive house mix for a radio show I was concerned that I don't have a collection of contemporary progressive house. What I do have however is a substantial amount of music from the early 1990's - when that genre really blossomed. The genesis of that progressive sound was a club night called 'Renaissance' that was started by Geoff Oakes in 1992 at a club called Venue 44 in Mansfield, a small town in Nottinhamshire. In 1993 the venue was changed to an old printworks in nearby Derby. The club presented a darker, deeper, more melodic sound than the more 'rave' oriented music policies of other clubs across the UK. It was typically seamlessly and harmonically mixed (which a young DJ called Sasha had been tutored in by Jon Da Silva at the Hacienda). The decor, artwork and branding was all carefully thought out - with chandeliers on the ceiling and dark velvet drapes and renaissance artwork projected onto the walls. From an interview with Oakes:
"The visual identity was a deliberate move away from the ‘rave’ influenced artwork of most clubs at the time. The distressed renaissance imagery really stood out and marked the night as something different... I wanted a mix of cool and full-on clubbers, which happened and worked perfectly. I was lucky to catch on very early to that wave of British artistes, djs and producers that started to come through in the early ‘90’s. Leftfield, Guerilla records, etc. That whole progressive sound was tagged as the Renaissance sound by the press."
Sasha was a close friend and key component of the night from the beginning. The whole thing was built around him, and the last 2 or 3 hrs of the night were his platform. I had only been running Renaissance for a few months when a mix tape from a completely unknown DJ from Hastings landed on my doorstep. It was, of course, John Digweed. John put music together in a really unique way and it was when i teamed him up with Sasha that the musical identity of the brand crystallised. I had the best two DJ's in the world as residents and they helped shape Renaissance’s reputation for musical integrity."
Alexander Coe (aka Sasha) and John Digweed were resident DJ's from early 1993 until late 1994. This mix attempt to capture the sound of a Sasha and John Digweed mix from very late 1993. All tracks are verified as forming part of the selections of that pair of DJ's in that year.
