The concept of complacency/ignorance as a fuel for dictatorships was a reoccurring theme throughout many of the units and lessons in both World Core and World History this year. I found this idea very current and applicable to not only our society and world events today but also the Cupertino community as a whole. This song is inherently a political piece. It compares the audience to examples from history to show that they do indeed have the responsibility to not only determine  their fates but to stand up for injustice. It is surprisingly outside the style of songs that I normally write, yet very true to my values and beliefs as an individual. I disguise the beginning of the song using an initially peaceful soundscape that morphs to that of a violent war in order to set the mood for the listener and create a sense of unease. I also chose to end the song with an audio clip of Donald Trump exclaiming “You’re fired!” almost robotically as the sound of a nuclear explosion reverberates through the air and a human heart beats, and fades. I deliberately had the heartbeat continue after the explosion to create ambiguity surrounding the events of the song.I have always found that art that creates discomfort often impacts the experiencer more deeply and meaningfully.
