Australia-based duo Lunar Disco land on Crosstown Rebels with new single ‘Devil’s Hands’, remixed by house heavyweights Luciano and Anthony Middleton.

Comprised of DJ and composer Nicolas Blistene and his singer-songwriter partner Kate Elsworth, Lunar Disco rose through the Parisian house scene but are now based in Australia, producing music that fuses live vocals and rich electronic textures. They veer towards the deeper, more sensual and playful end of the spectrum, while Kate has also been in hot demand as a vocalist by the likes of Deep Dish and labels such as Mobilee. Building on releases via Blond:ish’s Abracadabra Music, Kindisch and their own Suck My Disco imprint, late July welcomes a debut appearance on Crosstown Rebels for the release of their latest single, ‘Devil’s Hands’.

‘Devil’s Hand’ is a low-slung and sleazy take on indie disco. The bass is rough, with wild guitar riffs adding an extra layer next to the swinging, macho disco drums, while Kate’s steamy vocal brings inviting human soul as psyched-out guitars add a spaghetti western-style energy. The track then comes as a ‘Dirty Club Mix’ by Lunar Disco and Rebellion signee TAYA., opting for a rubbery groove for the back room, with moody bass and electronic pulses taking it deep into the night. 

Swiss-Chilean minimal maestro, long-time cult underground hero, and Cadenza boss Luciano heads up the B-side as he draws on his Latin heritage to cook up intricate percussive grooves across his remix to lock in listeners. His drums are rolling but heavy, and the claps and hits are layered carefully into an infectious tangle that never lets up. As both one half of Audiofly and on his own, final remixer Anthony Middleton has been at the heart of the house scene for many years, featuring as a vital presence in Ibiza each summer. His remix is sparse, with cosmic synths sequences unfolding over elastic drums and bass. It’s subtle but emotionally intense, and will make for a perfect late-night trip.

Australia-based but born out of the Parisian house music scene, Lunar Disco is DJ and composer Nicolas Blistene and his singer-songwriter partner Kate Elsworth. 

Together they have a unique mix of live vocals and richly textured electronic sounds that are deep, sensual and playful. Kate has worked with Sonny Fodera and Deep Dish on labels such as Defected, Mobilee, and Cafe Mambo, while Nicolas runs the French Kitchen label and has thrown events worldwide.

The excellent 'Terrible Happiness' proves that with seven minutes of uplifting retro-future disco brilliance - the drums are leggy and loose, the chords reach skywards, and Kate's steamy vocals finish the cosmic trip off in emotional fashion. 

A Club Mix layers in darker bass that powers things onward even more, but the irresistible vocal remains in place next to expansive chords that take you ever higher.

Remixer Gumm is a mainstay on the Melbourne scene who has gone from renegade party promoter to beloved festival headliner. He co-founded the city's Darklove brand and mixes up nu-wave, indie and disco. Here he gets dark, with slap-funk drums and prying synths bringing romance and late-night mischief to the original. The vocal becomes more haunting and makes this is very different but equally brilliant version.

This is another faultless package from Lunar Disco.

Lunar Disco has been gently percolating on the stove for quite some time. According to the duo behind the moniker – and that’s husband and wife Australian singer/ songwriter Kate Elsworth and French DJ/producer Nicolas Blistène. Signed on labels such as Kattermuke, Abracadabra, & Kindish, Lunar Disco continue their strong progression as artists with their recent debut on renowned club music imprint Crosstown Rebels with their EP ‘Devils Hands. This exquisite composition, boasting a singular track and three remixes by heavyweight producers Luciano, Audiofly, and a collaborative club mix with TAYA., exemplifies their prowess. An ultimate acknowledgment arrived when their ‘original mix’ earned the coveted title of ‘Essential New Tune’ on BBC1 radio show hosted by Pete Tong.

  Lunar Disco is an exciting modern disco proposition translating into “a cool new version of synth wave”. When it comes to the music, there are no limits to specific genres and in fact this is probably the best way to describe their performances: mixing their own tracks with some of their moment favorites from part of their 20 year music collection, LUNAR DISCO propose a refreshed version of the art of deejaying, moving from genre to genre and presenting their own productions as a HYBRID LIVE SHOW (vocal) through which they will explore a deep and cosmic sound brushed with some pop & disco flavour.

As if this wasn’t enough, the duo also started their own party brand called “Suck My Disco”, a non-seriously taken concept which neatly sums up the 70’s to the 90’s Playboy-style ethos, a platform that pretends not to pretend. SUCK MY DISCO is also the name of their new music label. in which they have been releasing their own originals, along with a surprise remix(er) on every EP.
