Hailing from Bogotá, Lunate makes street house laced with nods to Columbian folk, Detroit machine music and cassette wobble techno. An alumnus of the first MICRO_MUTEK in Columbia in 2014 and the 2015 edition of our festival in Montréal, he returns to the city as a @redbullmusicacademy participant. He’ll also be performing after hours at Stereo, October 6, as part of RBMA’s Insomnie Collective program.

"Sorrow’s only silver lining is the selflessness it inspires in others. The nightmare of last year’s fire in Oakland left so many of us shredded, shattered, and speechless. But a communal compassion surged up in response, with artists, allies, and acquaintances from all over the globe re-connecting and re-committing to the power and potential of independent music as a healing, unifying force. So many SILK friends and family reached out expressing the desire to contribute creatively to a relief effort it was clear the emotion deserved an outlet. Silk To Dry The Tears collects 31 such songs from a spectrum of 100% Silk alumni and affiliates, threaded across four sides of fogged house, fantasy acid, nocturnal electronics, sleepwalker pop, and rhythmic reveries of varied internal states. Totaling nearly 170 minutes, it’s a sprawl and a statement, shared in the spirit of inclusion, endurance, and empathy. Music brought us together; music will keep us together.

One of South America's most exciting young dance music producers, Lunate was a participant at the 2016 Red Bull Music Academy in Montréal. "A la Sombra de los Cerros" is an acid-tinged synthesizer jam taken from his new 'Niebla' EP, a self-described tribute to "Bogotá, Colombia's untamed metropolis." The EP is being released by Medellín-based label Discos Nutabe and showcases Lunate's impressive range as a producer, extending from euphoric and direct to meditative and labyrinthine.

Lunate's 'Niebla' 12" is out February 25 via Discos Nutabe, distributed by Rubadub.

Lunate - A la Sombra de los Cerros

For some nonsensical reason, our feet and head are commonly deemed as things completely alien to each other, parts of the same complex but so far apart that they cannot communicate. This mix by Colombian-born and now São Paulo resident Lunate is an excercise in coordinating both while sending burst of energy through our bodies that often accumulate around the pelvic region, which is all we can ask from some braindancing and foot-thinking.

Lunate is a small, moon-shaped, bone in the human hand, and a music project by Juan Manuel Cortés. Seeking to create musical compositions that carry the moody oscillations of Bogotá, the Colombian artist explores sound inspired by the scenery, cycles and dynamics of the city. 

His music has been presented live on stages like Mutek Montreal, Boiler Room and Sónar Bogotá. After completing his participation as an alumni of the Red Bull Music Academy 2016.
