Bettina the Ballerina 

There hadn’t been a single night in her short life that Amelia had drifted off to sleep without the sound of her musical box playing its strange little tune; even when she was ill once and had to stay in hospital her mother had set it playing before herself drifting off to sleep in an uncomfortable armchair by her daughter’s bedside. It had been a very quiet night, even the nurses said so; there had been no homesick cries and everyone seemed much brighter than usual in the morning.

Thinking back, this really came as no surprise to Amelia who, at the rather respectable age of 9 years, realised that there was something very special about the musical box. At first sight, it seemed quite a tatty looking object, but that was simply because it was old, very, very old indeed! It had belonged to her great grandmother who had lived forever ago and who, curiously enough, had also been called Amelia. “She must’ve known that I was trustworthy “ concluded Amelia in one of her frequent lectures to her collection of dolls and teddy bears, “ to give me not only her name but also Bettina!”
