30 Minute Break [Ep 10]

For years I had thought of the period from 2005 to 2011 as a veritable "Dark Ages" in the world of underground electronic music. I had considered tracks like Digital Mystikz' "Anti War Dub" (2006) and albums like Burial's "Untrue" (2007) as the exceptions to a relatively bleak music landscape during this period.

I wanted to challenge my assumptions a bit and take some time to dive in and see what this time period had to offer. 

It soon became apparent to me that a number of labels and producers that are household names today were extremely active during this period and many of my favorite tracks were produced far earlier than I had realized. For example, the now famous labels Ilian Tape & Hessle Audio had already released 15 records by 2010. Danilo Plessow's (MCDE) track "Raw Cuts #3," actually came out in 2008, which I found surprising considering how much airtime this record was still receiving around 2015 when I was first getting into this scene.

It's always fun to challenge your assumptions, I think I may revisit this concept in a longer form mix at some point in the next couple weeks.

30 Minute Break [Ep 11]

All tracks in this mix were produced from 2005-2011. I made a small mistake by miscategorizing "Schatrax (Josh Brent)- First Heartbeat" as being from 2010 when it was really produced much earlier (1997). I added this track to my library nearly a decade ago, so apologies for the slip up. 

An interesting discovery I made while preparing for this was that there appeared to be a lot of good music coming out of Switzerland during this time (Both Drumpoet Community & The Mountain People are from Zurich).

5-24 Mix

This mix was recorded entirely on my iPhone 12 mini using Djay Pro app with the Numark DJ2Go2 as an external controller. All tracks were things that either existed in my iTunes library or were stored in playlists within Djay. 

This is a little over 1.5 hr journey through balearic, downtempo, house and some techno as well with a few breakbeat tracks thrown in. Intensity slowly builds over time.

Probably the dodgiest turntables I have ever recorded a full vinyl mix on. Entirely recorded on two IMG Stage Line DJP-400s, one with a slightly broken tonearm that I had to smack back into place every 4-5 tracks.
