Fresh from throwing lavish shapes on the likes of Sous Music, Dutch producer LUPE returns to Catz 'n Dogz Pets imprint with some Greco-Roman level battle jams.

Three heavyweight bouts of authentic, broadsword acid; the 'Thraex' EP is named after Thracian Roman fighters and it's not hard to hear why as the gladiatorial levels of musical muscle and determination are tangible from the moment we enter the ring.

'Gladiator' makes the first move. A dramatic, pumping sweat-fest, it's characterized by huge snare hits and a venomous 303 line that keep us marching right into the pleasure dome.

Plenty more punches are packed by the Amsterdam artist who's also responsible for some of the city's wildest and most inclusive and diverse parties. 'Gonna Getcha' ups the pace and intensity with pure analog attitude while the bone-shaking finale 'That's How I Ride' sees LUPE striding out of the amphitheatre with their head held high. Ready to fight another day.

Thraex EP

LUPE's previous Pets release saw them don the Gladiatorial loin cloth to lay down a series of venomous acid strikes. Acid abounds again on their latest bombastic brace as the devious Dutch diviner pounds the drum and casts his musical spells.  

Until The Drums Speak is a tale of two sounds. The caustic bubbling of its 303 foundations countered by the soft and spritely flourish of LUPE's melody. Both come together to craft an electrifying and magical fusion for the dancefloor.

On 'The Invocation', LUPE conjures syncopated synths and firing snares that slap us right in the hypothalamus in a fierce and fearless assault on the senses.

Closing the EP by reining the snares and adding a heady dose of windy city shuffle is label favourite, Alinka, who reworks The Invocation with her trade mark bump and twirl. Softening the edges with smooth keys while always maintaining the pace, she lays down a groove-heavy take on the blistering original.

The title track is a slamming, hi-NRG ballroom odyssey with infectious synths that whir like electric zippers and a delicious come-hither female vocal.

'Ramrod', perhaps named after the infamous leather bar in New York in the ‘70s, bristles with bubbling energy. Clattering percussion, a hold-tight pace and festive vocal snatches combine in a bouncing club delight.

Taking the pedal off the gas slightly, 'Miss Thing' brings the mood back from boiling point to a strong simmer. A tension building transition track, it will keep the dancefloor cooking without sending it into overdrive.

'Battle Beat' shifts back into a higher gear, its driving drums and crunchy, reverbed snares channelling a more hypnotic kind of delirium. Best dropped after the party has well and truly hit its stride.

Riding a long introduction, closer 'The Essence' gets a little freaky at the 2-minute mark. Disco goblin vocals and cinematic horns add an air of drama to this dark journey that’s equal parts unnerving and intoxicating.

Across five uniquely captivating club cuts, LUPE demonstrates that decades of experience have enhanced rather than dulled their instinct for high-impact floor-fillers.

After years of thumpers and bumpers on labels such as Twirl, Love Child and Instant Replay, the erstwhile Go-Go dancer and Amsterdam club legend Lupe sashays in from the left and slam dunks us with unholy acid house thunderstorms. 'Only Sinners Survive'

His Pets debut is pounding late night tackle that sounds future-proof today but would have fit perfectly at any stage since the acid revolution. The title track is inspired, as is the whole EP, by magical TV drama consumed during lockdown; takes us straight across the leftfield with an electroclash style fusion of juggernaut acid and stark lyricism that reminds us that perfection is a delusion.

Deeper into the night we strut to strike deep mix gold on 'Den Of Iniquity' as a Lupe makes the drums sing in a slamming, Q&A style hook that will fit over any other track and wind the dancers up with its addictive and mischievous mutations. Finally we have 'Binge Dancer'. The biggest slammer of the EP, once again we're sent into a spin with broadsheet acid and the type of rattling, insistent percussion that ensures plenty of bingeing.

A key figure in Dutch nightlife, Lupe carries out a mission of unity through his music and parties. Based in Amsterdam, Lupe’s sound draws inspiration from acid house and disco as well as the key values that the electronic music scene is built around: peace, tolerance and respect. Over the years he developed from deejaying and promoting parties to a multi-faceted DJ/producer. 

His music is supported by a wide range of artists such as Derrick Carter, The Blessed Madonna, Andy Butler, Tom Trago, Erol Alkan, Heidi, Honey Soundsystem, Laurent Garnier, Spencer Parker, Jason Kendig, Truncate, Catz ‘N Dogz, Lauren Flax, Boys Noiz, Shadow Child, Alinka, Shaun J. Wright and many more. 

Creatively triggered as a child by a Christmas gift from his parents, the aptly-named compilation ‘Acid House’ on the Jack Trax label, started his exploration of dance music. 
Aged 16 he became a go-go dancer. Insatiably learning about artists and labels, collecting records, he evolved from club kid to dance music connoisseur. He graduated in film studies and collected records. Then Lupe decided to create fantasy worlds for others: on the dance floor.

From a DJ perspective, Lupe has residencies at Amsterdam’s globally-renowned Red Light Radio and the Parish parties at PiP Den Haag. He has thrown it down at esteemed Amsterdam clubs such as De School and Shelter, events around the world like Is Burning, Trouw, Buttons, Paradiso, Studio 80, 5DaysOff, Lowlands, Mysteryland, NOW&WOW, Dance Valley and even Madonna’s Sticky & Sweet Tour after-party at Heineken Music Hall. 

What’s more, he also played alongside some of the scene’s foremost names, not least Tiga, Hercules & Love Affair, Steffi, DJ T, Shinedoe, Prosumer, Tama Sumo, San Proper, Miss Kittin, Honey Dijon, Booka Shade, DJ Haus, Azari & III and so on.
As a promoter, Lupe has consistently been pushing an inclusive house and techno agenda in Amsterdam since 2004 via his own parties such as Get on Down, UNK, Acid Nouveau and Italo Elite with the latter winning the award for Best Party (2010) at the infamous Dutch Golden Gnome Awards where he was also nominated Best New DJ in 2005.

“I bring a new identity for dance, for men and women, straight and gay, black and white and so on. There is nothing to be scared of in each other. Nightlife is the designated area to overcome our differences in daily life, where we see each other freely in a new light.”
