Any artist is welcome to send us a track via freshonthenet.co.uk anytime between Monday lunchtime and Wednesday evening (or when we receive 200 submissions, whichever is sooner) - and all our moderators, including Tom Robinson, will listen to every track. This is our full inbox from the week beginning Mon 2nd December 2024: from Friday afternoon you'll be able to hear our shortlist and pick your favourites on this week's Listening Post which will appear at freshonthenet.co.uk/batch552

If a track you submitted does not appear in this list, it’s probably because another of your tracks appeared in our Fresh Faves or on the BBC Music Introducing Mixtape during the last three months — we ask that artists featured on either wait three months before resubmitting to give others a chance. 

We also don’t accept short previews or SoundCloud Go tracks that can only be heard as 30 second previews, and tracks made private after submission, which cannot be included in playlists. You will be able to resubmit the track in future. Tracks (and remixes of tracks) that have been previously submitted, and tracks from banned artists will also be removed.

Christmas songs and the like are also not eligible for the Listening Post, although we will collect these into a playlist that will be published on 24 December.

Are you ready to be transported to the wilds of the Scottish Highlands? We are excited to share the second single from the upcoming Highlands Album, 'Cailleach Beinne Bric' (The old Woman of Ben Breck). 

Arranged and performed by Ewen Henderson and produced bye Simon Richmond, this beautiful traditional Scottish Gaelic song, featuring additional vocals by Julie Fowlis tells the tale of the cailleach, a supernatural being who was said to guard her deer around Beinn a’ Bhric and Glen Nevis. 

The Cailleach appears in many folk stories across the Highlands, some describe her as a goddess of winter who has created and shaped the landscapes of the Scottish Highlands. 

The full Highlands soundtrack launches on 27th September alongside the Spa treatment.

Seven Little Ones

We are excited to share the second single from the upcoming Highlands Album ‘Tha Sneachd Air Druim Uachdair’ (There is Snow on Drumochter). 

In this 200 year old love song from the Scottish Highlands, fiddle by Ewen Henderson, bodhrán and mystic drones build around Julie Fowlis’ pensive vocal. The name Druim Uachdair means “top ridge” and Drumochter is the main mountain pass between the northern and southern central Scottish Highlands - in winter it can be subject to very severe weather conditions!

The full Highlands Treatment soundtrack launches on 27th September alongside the Spa treatment.

“Massive Attack were huge in my life, and were so inspiring for perfumery,” says Mark. “I’ve often used these rumbling dark tones of fragrance with flashes of orange, and that’s precisely where Massive Attack are for me.” Composer Craig Fortnam, best known for his work with North Sea Radio Orchestra, weaves dextrous guitar picking around the pure vocal tones of himself and Chantelle Pike – and with just a hint of orange in the mix.

The Knife’s playful ode to Santa’s sleigh ride concludes this Nordic mini-trilogy. “The Knife are in my top ten favourites of all time,” says Mark. “I love Fever Ray’s theatricality. On occasion we’ll have been fitting out a shop, and I’ll have taken one of her videos and suggest we use it as an inspiration.” Kansas-born Piney Gir, who performs regularly with Gaz Coombes from Supergrass, takes those reindeer on a fun-packed global excursion.

“My obsession with Leonard Cohen is never going away,” says Mark. “Recently I’ve made three more perfumes related to his work, and I’d love to be able to look back on my creative life in the way he might have looked back on his. As far as this song goes – well, for someone that never really seemed to manage well in any long term relationship, he has described it with such insight.” Chisara’s performance is full of poignancy and beauty.

This song felt almost omnipresent in mid-1998, a true evocation of summer. It was the only track ever recorded by Stardust (an offshoot of Daft Punk) and typified the French house sound: carefully chosen samples and gorgeous filters opening and closing. “When bands aren’t prodigious and haven’t put out a lot of material, it’s easy for tracks to get forgotten,” says Mark. Well, here’s a reminder, featuring the wonderful Jackie Oates and some sublime bodhrán playing from Brian Ó hEadhra.
