For the next installment of Manc institution El Diablo’s Social Club’s ‘To Rack & Ruin’ edits series comes from local Manc lads Out of the Basement who bring us two late summer bombs.
These tracks have both been kicking around for over a year now in slightly different forms but now we bring them to you fully refined and suitably mastered heavily for the dancefloor.

Out of the Basement are Steve Leggat and James Ellis. Both have been involved in Manchester's colourful music scene - amongst other things Steve has been running legendary Beat Club with The Stone Roses Mani and James is the founder of Manchester's now defunct deep house label ‘Drenched’.

Side A is a splendid edit of lost soul classic with beats and instruments added for full effect. Side B is a sleazy slo mo cut up of the Brothers Johnson version of the Shuggie Otis anthem 'Strawberry Letter 23'.

Oh boy, that came around quick!  One day we’re faxing giant penises to magazines and the next we’ve got kids and are on our 200th single release.  It’s been 22 years since things kicked off with Salt City Orchestra’s The Book and in the intervening years we’ve hopefully carved out our little corner in the pantheon of house music.  We’ve lived by our first “hidden” message on PAP001 “Look Forward Not Back” by keeping on keeping on but this is a chance to buy ourselves a pint.

PAP200 is three tracks from friends new and old that originally came out on a limited edition 12” Record Store Day release.  Crazy P(enis) return to the fold for the first time since 2003 and it’s good to have them back.  Last Knockers has their trademark stripped back electronic funk with Danielle Moore adding the disco fizz. There’s plenty of wonk and roll as it builds over 10 glorious minutes.

When Steve Cobby was asked what Paper meant to him he said “northern musical heritage” and we’ll take that.  He has been knocking it out the park since the early 90s and this is his debut release for the label.  Boule De Suif is a trip through funk and soul that is timeless but of it’s time; it’s what Herbie would sound like if he had grown up in Hull.

Finally Flash Atkins goes down a more conventional route with his trademark layered sound.  What starts as a straight forward deep house track evolves with trippy vocals and a chorus that brings the hairs up on the back of your neck.  Mixmag liked it so much they gave it their Disco Single of the Month.

With his stripped-down emotional love for music and kind soul, Leipzig-bound beatsmith and all round top geezer Luvless has been steadily cementing his reputation as one of contemporary house music’s finest.

Luvless is known for his work with Rose Records – a label he started with four other friends back in 2011 – and a smattering of appearances on several other labels. slamming down dusty disco edits as well as athomspheric house belters. Since 2017 he’s been focussing on his new project Velours Records. a vinyl outlet for different avenues of the Luvless sound and guest appearances by friends.

His music has been described as sweet, gentle even, but banging at the same time. It sometimes pays homage to the old Kerry days with extra magic dust sprinkled on top.
