Lion's Drums' name is an apt description of the Marseille producer's sound. Rhythm and heavy percussion are at the centre of his work — once you've heard one of his tracks, you'll be hard pressed not to recognise the rest of his musical endeavours.

Beyond these core components, Lion's Drums - real name Harold Boué - draws inspiration from his surroundings. In his own words, it's 'a bit rough, luminous though', just like external perceptions of Marseille. But perhaps most discernibly, it pays tribute to the diversity of the city, taking cues from Mediterranean, African and Northern European culture and tradition.

It's under his other moniker though that he first began making music all the way back in 2005. As Abstraxion Harold released several EPs and LPs, including outings on Nicolas Jaar’s Other People, Jennifer Cardini’s label Dischi Autunno and Biologic Records - the label he co-runs with Brussels producer DC Salas. It's been a home for a wealth of exciting artists since launching, including but not limited to Matisa, ڭليثرGlitter٥٥ and Malcolm, and the label bosses themselves.

More recently Harold's had his edit hat firmly on. Two hypnotic drum workouts of Manos Tsangaris came out last autumn on Cocktail d’Amor, one of which was premiered here on R$N, and these were quickly followed by long player, La Batterie, which consisted of edits, remixes and original works, all focused on the potential of the drum. 

Of course, with Harold there's no rest for the wicked so expect plenty more in store under both his aliases this year. But first, we invited him to record our mix for our main series, and here it is in all its mutating rhythmic glory...

Since 2014 Tominori Hosoya has been steadily releasing music for the love of creative expression.

His music has appeared on the likes of Minuendo Recordings, Snail Juice Records, Mixx Records and many more. However, his most recent outing has seen him appear on the prolific New York based imprint Scissor & Thread with a new EP which see's him operating under the alias of Tomi Chair alongside his own name. The release itself spans the realms of ambient, electronica, house and deep moody soundscapes. 

Based in Tokyo, Japan he has evolved as a producer and disc jockey across a number of years, utilising his own interest in progressive, forward thinking experimental music.

Meandering between worlds he is a truly unique talent and we are delighted to have him contribute to our mix series.

Tomi Chair (aka Tominori Hosoya): The Wednesday Alternative Mix

Last month, the Parisian duo of Guido Minisky and Hervé Carvalh aka Acid Arab took us on another absorbing musical tour with their latest album Jdid on Crammed Discs. Typically widescreen in influences, it is a real melting pot of sounds, melodies, percussion, strings and vocals from all across eastern music that bring new character to tried and tested house and techno rhythms. The Acid Arab sound is a daring collision of worlds but one this pair have managed to pull off better than anyone.

And that is the case on their far-flung mix for us: it's an colourful one that takes you from a bustling African market one moment to a dirty warehouse the next and on to dusty dunes and expansive river banks, all with a sense of cohesion that somehow makes complete sense. The tempos remain slow and unhurried, but the mix itself is always on the move.
