We played two records each all night, Andrew first then me, until the last half an hour of part two where it's one each. I travelled by train with a kidney infection and without a passport for 13 hours each-way to make this one and I'm glad I did. It was a fantastic night, so thanks to Andrew, Diego, Lele and everyone who was there dancing like a mad thing.

It is not everyday we are sent a 5 hour mix from someone we have asked to join our Phonica mix series; but when Sheffield & Manchester legend Luke Una sends one… you have to jump straight into it! Having become first recognised in the late 80’s and 90’s as one half of production team “The Unabombers” with Justin Crawford, Luke over the years has shown to be a master in all genres be it Balearic, to Brazilian to E soul, House, Disco and Techno, you name it! With his Worldwide FM show over the years gaining a cult following Luke has gained an even more of a broader crowd from his curation of his E Soul Cultura compilation series via the label Mr.Bongo (Both comps topping our EOY lists in 2022 and 2023). This exact vast taste (that is displayed in these compilations) is very much pummelled into this five hour journey of a mix like a piece of clay and sculpted into a fine piece of art. Andrew Weatherall (1963-2020) was a highly influential British DJ, producer, and remixer, renowned for his eclectic taste and innovative approach to music. Emerging from the vibrant London music scene in the late 1980s, Weatherall became a pivotal figure in the development of the acid house and electronic music genres. He gained widespread recognition for his remix of the track "Loaded" by Primal Scream, which helped define the sound of the early '90s and contributed to the rise of the Madchester scene.

Weatherall's work was characterized by a unique blend of genres, seamlessly fusing elements of house, techno, rock, and post-punk. When mulling which direction to go in for RA's 1000th mix celebrations, many options came to mind. Some shadowy character 2-stepping around the fringe of our collective consciousness? An impossible-level IDM icon?

All tempting. But, ultimately, we are a DJ-forward publication and this is a DJ mix series. It felt truer to the history of the RA Podcast to release deep vault material from a time when the world of niche records felt different, tighter, more discrete.

The fourth-longest mix in the series' history is an unrepeatable marathon set recorded in 2012 at a superclub that no longer exists. 2012, incidentally, is farther away from 2025 than 2012 was from 2000... if we have to clock it, so do you.

It's the coming together of one British icon who passed away in 2020, and another whose time on the road has scaled back considerably as of late. DJ Harvey agreed to exactly one b2b set in his life: this one, with Andrew Weatherall.

The night took place at Trouw, an Amsterdam club already considered legendary before it shuttered its doors in the opening hours of 2015, as part of an RA series anchored around start-to-close combinations. Harvey was at the peak of an irresistible career second act, which dovetailed with a disco revival that dominated clubs for years. Weatherall, with infinite brownie points stockpiled from the '90s, remained everyone's favourite debonair psychonaut. 

What follows is 385 scintillating minutes of arpeggiated chug and slow-cresting climaxes: a moment when the resting heart rate of dance floors plunged lower than any comparable point in the 21st century. A masterclass, entirely self-contained in audio form.

If you've got time to spare, a fun side game is sussing out who plays what. A disco-dub cover of Echo & the Bunnymen? Smart money's on Weatherall. Exuberant EQ'ing of The Isley Brothers? Gotta be Harvey. As for the low 'n slow, lightly spangled house that was all the rage in the early 2010s (think Maxxi Soundsystem, Disco Bloodbath, Rub & Tug, C.O.M.B.I. and Full Pupp), it's anyone's guess. 127 BPM feels practically like an F1 car.

When we kicked off our RA.1000 campaign, we outlined a few goals: tick off a handful of long-awaited dream guests, honour architects who shaped the world around us and deliver recordings you truly can't hear anywhere else. Full send.

DJing and the mythmaking around it has undergone a quantum leap since 2012, let alone 2006, 1996 or 1989. For those of us who were kicking around in the former, there's a creeping melancholy that our prime is fast becoming a matter of historical record. The killing moon really did come too soon. 

Where will electronic music, DJ sets or any of this be in 2044? Hard to say. Best not to overthink that one. Instead, we want to say thanks to all contributors on the series so far. Weatherall added vocal samples from the US soul group The Emotions, a drum loop from an Italian bootleg of Edie Brickell's song What I Am, alongside snatches of other Primal Scream songs, and frontman Bobby Gillespie singing a line from Robert Johnson's Terraplane Blues.

Gillespie saw Loaded as being part of the Jamaican tradition of dub records, where songs are deconstructed at the mixing desk, adding new elements and desecrating existing ones.

It propelled the rock band onto the dance floor, and kick-started their career.

"I think it's time to stop saying 'this is a dance record' and 'this is a rock record,'" said Gillespie at the time. "If you can play music, you can do whatever you want. Just use your imagination."

The success of Loaded led to Weatherall being recruited for the whole of Screamadelica, establishing him as one of the UK's most in-demand producers.

While remixing acts like St Etienne, Beth Orton and My Bloody Valentine, he also held down a DJ slot on London's Kiss FM and ran two club nights in London.

However, he never became a household name like his contemporaries Paul Oakenfold and Fatboy Slim - a career move that was entirely deliberate.

"That sort of carry-on was never for me," he told the Independent in 2016. "It's a lot of work, once you go up that slippery showbiz pole, and it would keep me away from what I like, which is making things."

Instead, he carved out a career on the cutting edge of techno, with projects including Sabres of Paradise and Two Lone Swordsmen.

'Titan of music'
In 2017, he explained the lure of the dancefloor in an interview with Uncut magazine.

"It's the enduring appeal of transcendent experience, which has been with us for 200,000 years. A room, coloured lights, smoke and music? Over to you, Roman Catholics. There are ancient Greek rituals involving herbal drugs to achieve transcendence.

"People were having transcendent experiences in 1940s dancehalls, dancing to a big band; now we do it with drum machines and electronic technology - it's the same concept. Humanity hasn't changed for 100,000 years, but our technology has."

Musicians paying tribute to Weatherall included Ride guitarist and former Oasis bassist Andy Bell, who described him as "absolute titan of music".

BBC 6 Music DJ Gilles Peterson said it was "hard to put into words" the "influence and impact he has had has had on UK culture."

Hacienda DJ and author Dave Haslam tweeted he was "one of the greatest, sweetest, funniest guys I've ever met".

And Tim Burgess from The Charlatans wrote he was "shocked and saddened to hear that cosmic traveller Andrew Weatherall has left the building".
