L'Essentiel 131 – LUXXURY

Just Like It Was Before is the new single by LA-born Blake Robin—better known as LUXXURY. Made in close collaboration with Jill Lamoureux of Scavenger Hunt and Tim Bernhardt of Satin Jackets. If that combination of ingredients excites you: you’re right, it should.

Just Like It Was Before has a certain endlessness to it. Glassy, yet warm; beautifully classic, but incredibly modern at the same time. Dance music for adults. Shiny, yet subdued; like a vintage Camaro. Quintessential electronic pop music, done right.

The song itself deeply explores the perils of hindsight in the digital age; “I’m so sick of staring at my phone”, which rings through the pre-chorus as the perfect summary of this emotion. Even though the lyrics convey a yearning to days gone past, there is a certain hopefulness to the song which whispers that it might just be alright. A sentiment not out-of-place in our current pandemic climate. 

The crystalline, squeaky-clean instrumental comes courtesy of a co-production with Tim Bernhardt, of Satin Jackets fame—providing the perfect bedding for Lamoureux’ sweet, watery voice. 

LUXXURY is a bona fide disco-wizard with the receipts to prove it—whether it’s supporting the likes of Giorgio Moroder and The Juan Maclean on tour or going viral on Tik Tok, Robin is like the Nu-Disco Swiss army knife of the dance world. 

With regular support from taste makers such as KCRW, SPIN, Kitsuné and Future Disco to name a few, LUXXURY’s Just Like It Was Before is an excellent example of his signature brand of melancholic disco, shooting some much-needed glitter into our world.

LA producer Blake Robin aka LUXXURY’s new full length album finds the bassline-obsessed disco addict experimenting with funk, synthpop and even (gasp!) pure instrumentals. “Increasingly in my most recent singles I’ve been treating vocals like instruments” says Robin, “backgrounding and balancing them as sonic elements instead of centerpieces,so the listener gets lost in the groove.” And indeed the star of these 11 songs is undoubtedly the 11 stellar basslines that ground the swirling synths and melodies as vocal fragments coolly dip in and out of the mix along. Highlights include: KCRW fave “What Are We Gonna Do?”; the slap bass workout “Somebody Tonight”; the contemplative “…At Any Moment” (playlisted by Purple Disco Machine) and its sister track, the title track “Alright”; while playful disco-house burner “Let’s Stay Together” blends house and jazz-funk rhythms with his trademark dusty basslines. RAPTURE (LUXXURY LIVE EDIT)

LA producer LUXXURY (Blake Robin)’s “Alright EP” deconstructs the title track of his latest album. Arriving at a moment of transition, the song - performed, sung and fully mixed by Robin - is a minimal synthpop ode to optimism, with the message: “everything is gonna be alright.” In the classic tradition of Jamaican versioning, the tracks are not remixes but rather deconstructions and reductions of the original. For example, “Alright (Dub)” removes the synths from the original; while “Alright (Ambient)” isolates *only* the synths; and in classic 12” single form, “Alright (Drumcapella)” allows the listener to hear just the beat under the isolated vocal; while “Alright (Instrumental) trips away the vocals allowing the deep bass and shimmering synths to shine.

As LUXXURY puts it: “As a collector of multitrack stems, I enjoy hearing the soloed instruments and wanted to experiment with releasing my own material that way. These elements can certainly be used as DJ and remixer tools, but they also stand alone for a listener to enjoy and hear the song in a completely new way. And I love how, unlike remixes, nothing new has been added to the song, only taken away: these are all simply reductions of the original version.” The song itself a reworking of LUXXURY’s song  ‘..At Any Moment' (playlisted by Purple Disco Machine) - so these versions are versions of a version. You heard me.

Having been one of his biggest festival tunes in the summer of 2014, the Luxxury mix of Greg Wilson’s 'Summer Came My Way' - which originally surfaced on last year’s 'Schooled In The Classics' 12” - was put on the back burner throughout the winter in readiness for a full 2015 release. Juxtaposed by Walter Ego’s equally sublime take on the track, the release marks the first of eight records to be issued over the summer months.

Sometimes composition is a long and arduous process, other times a song arrives fully formed. The latter was the case for Greg when he imagined 'Summer Came My Way' as a vehicle for hitherto unknown vocal forces of nature, The Reynolds - twins Katherine and the song’s lead singer Carmel - who, by beautiful serendipity happened to live within a mile of Greg’s Merseyside home.

Bursting out of LA with a lavish twelve-part re-edit series last year, Luxxury’s brand of hazy, slo-mo reworks - a West Coast Balaeric fusion - has catapulted him onto the world stage. Opening his mammoth eight- hour Berghain set in 2013 with Luxxury’s 'Hotel California' rework, Greg helped bring his Los Angeles vibes to wider attention, bolstered by his subsequent support of other reworks; 'Night Fever' and 'Riders On The Storm'.

A victim of his own success, 'Hotel California' gained Luxxury a little too much notoriety and, after a Wall Street Journal interview began circulating, Warner came down on him like a ton of bricks on finding out he’d used The Eagles’ multitracks. All was resolved however and he’s currently recording his forthcoming album, with great things expected for 2015 and beyond. The Luxxury approach perfectly fitted Greg’s vision of the song and the result is a glorious nine-minute epic, just in time for the summer.

With releases on the legendary Ninja Tune, San Francisco’s murky Symbols and Kerri Chandler’s jackin’ MadTech, Walter Ego’s appeal stretches across the board; from forward thinking house to rough and ready grime. Having got to know the Sheffield musician during recent years, Greg was impressed by what he heard, especially an as yet unreleased project he was working on in collaboration with London singer, Obenewa. Inviting him to remix the track, Walter returned an ethereal yet mechanical take on 'Summer Came My Way', his delicately decaying synths and cold hydraulic rhythm giving the track a brooding quality and placing The Reynolds in an entirely new context.

His much lauded edit of 'Riders On The Storm' made some waves last year and then it vanished into a haze of legal ambiguity and only strong supporters of the track like Greg Wilson had it. Well we've got our hands on a live remix version from one of his 'Live Remix' shows to give you. His first every European Tour is coming up in September and I look forward to seeing this one in person. The first show of the tour is a show at Festival Number 6 where he's playing the Super Weird Happening Stage. 

Luxxury's version is one of the most interesting edits we've heard for a long time. Sultry as hell with vocoder vocals and a feeling that echoes in your head long after the track has finished. His additions are beautifully produced and this version brings to the fore background melodies from the original and puts them front and centre. Accomplished stuff

He was personally selected by Duran Duran's bassist and co-founder John Taylor to cover "Planet Earth". LUXXURY follows the success of his latest singles “Breathe (Again)” (1.5 million Spotify streams in first 5 months) and neo-disco classic “Feel the Night” with a new smooth yet dance-able magic hour-tinged love song, “I Need You.” Singer/Producer/Multi Instrumentalist Blake Robin explains: “It's the most honest song I’ve ever written, indeed when I sing it live I blush from revealing myself in public so shamelessly. But frankly I’m a bit of an exhibitionist, so it all works out.” On keys once again is Robin’s frequent collaborator Billy Caruso, whose shimmering Rhodes line gives the otherwise upbeat dance song an aching, melancholy tone. Guest bassist Joe Karnes from Fitz and the Tantrums gives Robin’s original bassline a punch in the gut, elevating it to disco funk heaven.

Feelin' Fine in '79: A KCRW Exclusive Mixtape

Be Good 2 Me is a muscular, bass guitar-powered take on what happens when disco goes rock 'n' roll. LUXXURY explains: "‘Be Good 2 Me' was inspired by that 1979 moment where rock bands like Kiss, The Rolling Stones and Rod Stewart all made their token 'disco song.’ I was also inspired by  the melodic punk basslines of The Clash’s ‘The Magnificent Seven’ and Hot Chocolate’s ‘Every 1’s A Winner”, with its funk stomp and heroic electric guitar line. I love the intersection of disco, funk, rock and pop, all with a dash of post-punk ‘we can barely play our instruments’ attitude. Live Remix DJ Set @ OutsideLands, S.F. August 10, 2018

LA indie disco/funk producer LUXXURY (Blake Robin) kicks off a series of indie dance/nu disco singles to culminate in an EP of duets to be released Summer 2019. “Another Lifetime” finds him sharing microphone duties with fellow LA synth-loving duo Scavenger Hunt (Jill Lamoureux & Dan Mufson). “After last summer's success with Kraak & Smaak on “Keep it Together” I got really excited about collaborating with other similarly minded artists to stretch out my sound. For the first time, I let go of controlling the production side and let Dan focus on wearing that hat, while Jill and I worked out melodies and lyrics based on a sort of “Sliding Doors” daydream I’d just had. Periodically I’d switch to bass or guitar to work on the music with Dan, then back to the topline with Jill, til by the end the song was absolutely the perfect blend of all of our input. It was super fun teamwork, something I’m getting much better at after years of hunkering down with long nights alone in front of Ableton Live!”  Other collaborations in the works for LUXXURY include Adeline from Escort, Satin Jackets, Goldroom and many more.

Los Angeles-based disco maven LUXXURY’s follows up on KCRW "Morning Becomes Eclectic" favorite "What Are We Gonna Do?" with another quasi-instrumental “Make it Right." Like Khruangbin meets Tory Y Moi and Washed Out with a falsetto nod to The Bee Gees, the song is all dusty beats, dreamy synths and a minimal just out of reach falsetto vocal. Inspired by a breakup (a bad one, like...really bad) the song is a hopeful refrain of redemption, in anticipation of new beginnings.

“Set Me Free", the title track from Los Angeles disco/funk lover LUXXURY's new EP, is pure disco: a walking bassline, a melancholy chord progression, and a simple, pleading vocal mantra. The parenthetical in the title ("Song for a Person Walking Away) evokes the image of someone - or perhaps all of us, in these weirdo times - optimistic strutting into the distance, away from ones troubles, toward a better future. The EP's five slices of dreamy 80’s disco and funk influenced bedroom pop first got on the radar of in the know indie dance fans after repeated airplay on LA tastemaker station KCRW . But the grooves, rubbery bass lines and shimmering synths barely mask the anxiety in the vocals, as LUXXURY (Blake Robin) sings as if he were peering into the future from the world we’ve all just - and so, very recently - left behind.
