Lee Calhoun spent 35 years searching for heirloom apples in the south. He discovered 450 varieties of apple trees in people's yards and old fields, and wrote about their history in his book, Old Southern Apples. Laura Candler recorded this story for North Carolina Public Radio, WUNC.

Theo is 95 and lives on Swan's Island, a tiny island off the coast of Maine. She doesn't have hospice care. She doesn't employ nurses. She has good neighbors. Here's a story about Theo and her neighbor Donna, who often acts as Theo's caretaker and a little bit more, a woman who helps her sort pills and also makes sure she's wearing the right sized slippers.

North Dakota’s oil boom has separated hundreds of working parents from their kids. Jesse Atwell used to live with his wife, Shannon, and their four boys on a farm in Missouri until he left to get an oil job in North Dakota.  That was over 2 years ago. Recently, Shannon decided to move their four young boys from their large farm to a tiny trailer near Williston, North Dakota to live with Jesse again. The family is still adjusting to the change. This is Shannon’s story.

Oilfield workers might be able to afford the $2000/month commonly required to rent apartment in rural North Dakota, but for schoolteachers, finding an adequate home without going broke is a challenge. This story follows three schoolteachers in Stanley, North Dakota whose workplace gone above and beyond to find them a place to live.

 In 1952, a group of oilfield workers' wives in Williston, North Dakota decided to form a social group called the Ladies Petroleum club. For 60 years, they've been meeting once a month to share meals, play cards, host dances, and generally just socialize.  Sylvia McCauley has been a member since 1965. I sat down with her at a recent meeting, and she shared her thoughts about what it has been like to be a member of the Ladies Petroleum Club for nearly 50 years.
