Carrie McGee and her colleagues at The Museum of Modern Art have won international respect for their unique efforts to make the MoMA’s extensive resources, collection and programs accessible to visitors with disabilities. 

In this lecture McGee discusses the development and outcomes of MoMA’s programs, including the world- renowned MoMA Alzheimer’s Project, in order to validate the notion that high quality arts programming positively impacts the physical, intellectual and emotional lives of those who participate.

Ep.18: Recreation - Exploring Ekphrasis through words and music

Writer and academic Dr Shevaun Cooley presents ‘You must change your life’, a discussion of the intersection of art and poetry, and what happens when those works carry with them the whiff of death. 

This talk was presented as part of the public program accompanying the exhibition 'Memento Mori' at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, UWA. 

Dr Shevaun Cooley is a Western Australian poet and academic. Her work has appeared in Southerly, Meanjin, Cordite and The Best Australian Poems (2009).  Most recently, her poem ‘Soundings’ was shortlisted for the University of Canberra’s inaugural Vice Chancellor’s International Poetry Prize.

While preparing the Yirrkala drawings for exhibition, Art Gallery of New South Wales Conservator Sarah Bunn was excited to uncover layers of information in the process. Material culture not only tells stories about its content, but also of its making and life journey. Hear from Sarah Bunn as she reveals her discoveries.

Ep 4: Uncovering the Yirrkala Drawings with Sarah Bunn

An astonishing collection of crayon drawings on brown paper was first created by Yolngu artists in late 1940s north-east Arnhem Land. Now part of the Berndt Collection of Australian Aboriginal cultural materials, this talk brings together insights from a museum perspective about the artworks and their history, conservation and presentation.

Hear from Berndt Museum Associate Director, Professor Sandy Toussaint, Associate Registrar Kelly Rowe and Archivist Eve Chaloupka as they discuss the cultural history and preparation of the works in the current exhibition.

This discussion took place at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery on 27 February 2015 as part of the public program accompanying the exhibition Yirrkala Drawings.

Ep 6: Challenges for Emerging Curators

Sana Bharadwaj, PhD Candidate in Linguistics at UWA, reflects on how language, culture and identity interact in the sociolinguistics of the Indian diaspora in Australia.

This event was organised alongside the exhibition Bharti Kher: In Her Own Language, presented at LWAG in 2016 as part of the Perth International Arts Festival. 

The talk was part of LWAG's Friday Talk series and presented with Linguistics at UWA. The talk was introduced by Dr Celeste Rodríguez Louro, Lecturer in Linguistics at UWA.

Ep 7: Stories of the Indian Diaspora with Sana Bharadwaj

In this talk, Professor Philip Mead and Dr. Catherine Noske delve deeper into historical and literary associations conjured by the artworks  of Sir Sidney Nolan in celebration of Nolan’s Centenary year, and highlighting his works in the UWA Art Collection.

Professor Philip Mead is inaugural Chair of Australian Literature, School of Humanities and Director of the Westerly Centre. Dr Catherine Noske is a Lecturer in Creative Writing in English and Cultural Studies in the School of Humanities and is Editor of Westerly magazine.

Ep 8: Celebrating the Centenary of Sidney Nolan with Philip Mead and Catherine Noske

Using archival images, Madeleine Clear, co-founder of Tiwi Design, reminisces about the early years of Tiwi Design, where she worked closely with artists in the late 1960s.

From humble beginnings as a printmaking workshop, it went on to gain national and international recognition as one of the earliest and most successful Aboriginal art projects in Australia.

The Tiwi Design art centre continues to produce unique and beautiful work specialising in printed fabrics.

This talk was recorded on Saturday 28 October 2pm at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery.

Ep 9: In the Beginning with Tiwi Design co-founder Madeleine Clear

Artist, curator and textile theorist Dr Belinda von Mengersen delivers the keynote talk, 'Textiles Lucidity', for the 2019 symposium Social Fabric at Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery.

Organised alongside the exhibition HERE&NOW19: Material Culture, Social Fabric was a day-long symposium that brought together artists, theorists and curators to explore ideas surrounding textile-based art practices. The symposium teased out ideas woven into HERE&NOW19: Material Culture, which was curated by Joanna Sulkowski and featured new artwork incorporating textiles by Western Australian artists Ómra Caoimhe, Teelah George, Susan Roux, Holly Story and Marzena Topka. 

This audio file begins with introduction from Ted Snell, UWA Chief Cultural Officer, and Lee Kinsella, Curator of the Cruthers Collection of Women's Art, followed by the Keynote Talk by Dr Belinda von Mengersen titled 'Textiles Lucidity'. 

Social Fabric took place on 16 November 2019 at Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery at the University of Western Australia and was presented in partnership with the UWA School of Design.

Ep 10: Textiles Lucidity with Belinda von Mengersen

Artist Iain Dean talks with LWAG Director Professor Ted Snell on his work, including a new piece, 'We are Crumbs', commissioned for INSIDE/OUT, a series of artworks for the LWAG's south-facing windows celebrating its 30th anniversary. A selection of Dean's work from 2017-2020 was also featured in 'The Long Kiss Goodbye', LWAG's 2020 Perth Festival exhibition.

Iain Dean is a Perth-based multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting, drawing, sculpture and ceramics. His work is held in public and private collections across Australia and has been widely exhibited nationally and internationally in Denmark, Sweden, Paris and New York.

Professor Ted Snell, AM CitWA, is Director of the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery. He has published widely and curated many exhibitions and has contributed to the national arts agenda as Chair of the Visual Arts Board and Chair of University Art Museums Australia.

LWAG Director Ted Snell delivers the first in our 'Art Aside' series. In these short 5-10 minute episodes, Ted delves into fascinating and little-known stories within the history of art. 

This first 'Art Aside' explores the theft of the 'Mona Lisa' and how artists and friends Pablo Picasso and Guillame Apollinaire became entangled in the investigation.

Art Aside 1: The Stolen Smile

Munich-based artists David Bielander and Helen Britton share reflections and insights on their practice as artists in this public talk during the 2019 symposium 'MAKING: A living?'

Produced in collaboration between LWAG, the 2019 Fremantle Biennale and Artsource, 'MAKING: A living?' brought together local, national and international artists, musicians, editors, marketing experts and more to explore ways that artists are adapting digital technologies for new, innovative means in various ways in their practices. 

David Bielander is an artist and jeweller. From 2006–2010, he has Artistic Assistant to Professor Daniel Kruger, Academy of Fine Arts Burg Giebichenstein, Halle, Germany; since 2011 he has been an external consultant to the jewellery department, Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. He has received numerous awards, including the Munich Förderpreis (2009); Herbert Hofmann Prize (2010); the Françoise van den Bosch Prize (2012); and the Swiss Federal Design Prize (2012).

Helen Britton is an artist and jewellery designer. Britton received her MFA from Curtin University in Western Australia, and then studied under Otto Künzli at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Her work has been the subject of major retrospectives at Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery (2017) and the Neues Museum in Nuremburg (2013), and is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.

In 1986, Hoffman was the Honorary Director of the fundraising appeal to build the Gallery, which officially opened to the public on 18 July 1990.

Learn more about the Cruthers Collection of Women's Art (CCWA) in this conversation with CCWA curator Lee Kinsella and members of LSAC (LWAG Student Advisory Committee) Victor Arul, Fannisa Balqis Assyilah, Mia Davis and Amy Reid. 

One of several major public collections owned by the University of Western Australia, the CCWA consists of over 700 works of art created by Australia women artists. In this conversation, Kinsella discusses the history of the CCWA, her role as curator as well as new initiatives, including the CCWA online database and forthcoming exhibition '(Un)ladylike Acts: Recent Acquisitions from the Cruthers Collection of Women's Art'.

HERE&NOW20: Perfectly Queer is the 2020 iteration of Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery's annual HERE&NOW exhibition series exploring issues and themes pertinent to Western Australian contemporary art practice.

Curated by Brent Harrison, HERE&NOW20: Perfectly Queer focuses on the practice of queer artists in Western Australia and examines how artists draw on histories and their own lived experiences to create artworks that reflect on what it means to be queer. It features artwork by Benjamin Bannan, Nathan Beard, Janet Carter, Lill Colgan, Jo Darbyshire, Brontë Jones, Andrew Nicholls and Colin Smith.

In this episode, Michael Houston and Sofie Nielsen from the Berndt Museum of Anthropology are joined by members of the 2020 LWAG Student Advisory Committee Maya Quinn and Jeremy Passmore to discuss the online exhibition 'Expressions of India: From the Ronald M. And Catherine H. Berndt Collection'. 

Originally scheduled to take place in person, 'Expressions of India' was modified to take place as an online exhibition because of the Gallery's closure due to COVID-19. Tune in to hear how the process of shifting the exhibition online presented a range of new challenges, as well as exciting opportunities.
