Up next on Soul Clap Records, the label that brought you the funk and all that stomping to move your trunk, we're smoothing it out with something truly deep. Presenting the break out debut of talented young David Marston. His roots reach back to his city of birth, Chicago, then spread to the island of Jamaica, where he grew up fascinated with the new world of sound around him. Early guitar training and eclectic musical influences exposed him to classic rock, the blues, jazz, reggae and dub; inexorably the emotive power of music took its hold on him. Now he represents the city of Philadelphia and strives to make music that combines varied, contrasting, and diverse musical elements in a manner that is both intricate and elegant. 

We originally took notice of David a couple years back when he sent us "Gruv", a deep saxophone driven bomb that became the A side of the Jamaicalia EP. Then it took over a year for him to feel ready with his next body of music, which included the future Deep 4 Life anthem "I Don't Want", "My Love Will Be Crying" and "Trust Me". For this EP we also have the world premier of Gemini Love aka Crew Love's three headed and two faced monster, Eli Goldstein, Gadi Mizrahi and Nick Monaco, who have gotten together to present a punky, funky remix of "I Don't Want". 

About his EP, titled Jamaicalia, in David's words: 
"Jamaicalia is a marriage of Jamaica and Tropicalia. I first encountered the term Tropicalia as the caption of a photograph taken in Jamaica. Intrigued, I discovered that Tropicalia was an avant-garde art movement that was started in the 1960s in Brazil. The movement came to exemplify cultural hybridity. It encouraged cultural syncretism: the merging of various and divergent artistic influences with the purpose of creating something novel and powerful. I am fascinated by Brazilian music, and the songs that are featured on this EP undoubtedly have strong Brazilian influences. My music, to a great extent, is the result of fusion; it is a creolized music, a pastiche of diverse styles. While my music is not typically Jamaican, Jamaican culture has had a significant influence on my approach to music creation. For me, Jamaicalia is an apt title for this body of music, because it embodies an experimental amalgam of world and dance musical elements."

Doin It Right

DJ Koze's 2013 album opus Amygdala has continued to bewitch all who encounter it since its release. Tipped as his own personal Sgt. Pepper, the sublime long-player revealed a fully-realised and personal body of work, complete with a classic songwriting at its core, House in its heart, and veins coursing with psychedelic color. La Duquesa' was the album's dreamy single standout, a journey into deep, tropical ecstasy. XTC' begins in the same spirit, and captures the all the blissful allusions of its name, but its initial gentility belies the deep intensity to come. Floating pads glow with celestial ambience as a kick drum is gradually coaxed into solid form, and the introduction of spoken text begins the second act. Many people are experimenting with the drug Ecstasy,' it says, ...is the drug like the lie and meditation the truth Or am I missing something that could really help me". XTC' then transforms: sweetly imploring tones become demanding, gentle gradients between chords turn hard-edged, and sharp hi-hats cut through the haze. Complete with Koze's signature percussive quirks, it drives towards the track's final pay off: an undeniable, all-consuming, irresistible high. Knee On Belly' recalls Koze at his most tongue-in-cheek and overt, it is bright, bold and literally brassy, using cut-up horns of all shapes and sizes to patchwork together his own unique arrangement. With the highs and mid ranges accounted for, Koze adds in a swollen, thrumming bass line to mix to bring this floor-filler to life. Knee on Belly' recalls a raw, filtered and funky approach to groove, with a nod to disco house and the art of artful sampling, as it orbits between its own neon highs and simmering lows.

A Brief Utopia (A project by Jinjé) A Brief Utopia was born from an EP released earlier this year by Jinjé (aka, Lee J Malcolm from Vessels) on Scene Unseen. Stepping away from his usual production duties and focusing more on his passion for live drumming and percussion instruments. This was the starting block for much of the composition on the this record. He quickly realised that this would be a brilliant thing to do live and reached out to fellow musicians Danny Templeman (Submotion Orchestra, Gentleman’s DubClub) and Nathan Moseley (Fwar, Brolin) to put together a high energy show aimed at clubs and festivals alike.A Brief Utopia brings a colourful, vibrant and visually engaging experience. Drawing on a love of music from around the world focused through a lens of live drumming, tuned percussion and psychedelic synth work.

Anytime Will Do

Little is known about this freaky duo whose sound straddles opposing polarities, merging organics and synthetics, joining traditional textures with futuristic finish. These are sample-licious tracks that also feature original vocals and raw analog synths. They are noisy but clean, rough but smooth, soft AND crunchy.  

On one hand, it's mad-cap multicultural disco funk as on Si Jambo (translated loosely as 'ALL GOOD') and 2Tac Onana, and on the other it's cybernetic weirdness and italo-inflected electro with 'Non-Binary Joys on the Venus Holodeck' and 'Czary Mary,' which sounds like it could be the flip-side to Sharivari.  

In between this binary divide is 'Something For the Mind,' a brilliant piece of pop music that springs lightly into your brain with catchy bleeps, incredible vocoder, and a beat guaranteed to get the braindance party started.

Dimlite - Can't Get Used To Those (Afterlude)

bORDEL Records is back with a single taken from Turbotito’s last EP on the label, ‘It’s Always The Same’, back in May. This time it comes with innovative remixes from Kasper Bjorke and Gemini Brothers. As well as his solo work as Turbotito, Filip Nikolic is also a producer for the likes of Bonde Do Role, Azealia Banks, Baby Alpaca and many more. He runs his own outlet for his material and on this release worked with vocalist Baby Alpaca to serve up a track with a strong emotional impact. This glistening but downbeat pop single, ‘Different’ features a deep and sombre speech about love and what’s left of it, in regard to what we are doing to nature and our environment. It comes with its own video which finds New York City underwater with only one man left. Danish producer and hfn music artist known for his immersive disco house and pop LPs Kasper Bjorke is the first to remix. He flips the track into a superbly slow burning six minute number with tumbling drums, the original’s pained vocals and some loose percussion to help move the groove along. He also provides a top dub mix that strips the vocals and has more focus on the rueful keys and heavy drums. The final remix is from Romanian producers and twins Gemini Brothers. The Skint and Night Noise associates go for something more swirling and synth heavy, with cosmic chords and icy hi hats taking you on a mid-tempo house journey. This is a tasteful package of tender house and disco sounds that will inject any set with real feelings.
