Especial is delighted to welcome Odopt back to the label, this time teaming up with Sano for a club-heavy global excursion and the vocal deep dive of Picha. A meeting of friends and collaborators across continents and years, finally presented in vocal and instrumental, as well the welcome return of label stalwart Jamie Paton with additional remix and dub to bite.

Long-time fans of Sebastian Hoyos aka Sano’s productions, seeing him release for Matias Aguayo’s Comeme and Munich’s Public Possession, Especial jumped at the chance to present Odopt’s reworkings of Sano’s oeuvre, taking vocalist’s Lolito
night-time exoticisms and offering a red-lit basement, dark room anthem.

As with all good things, time let the music ferment. The 2016 outline became a 2019 demo, first presented to the label, and emphatically embraced. With Sano returning from Barcelona to his native Columbia, replacing the world of club culture with horticulture, Odopt found their new Paris base led them to finally hit the pocket, the tribal percussion propelled by the razor-sharp snare and perfectly, more cowbell.

Who better than to request remixes than the origin of Especial, its first artist, mainstay mixer, and designer of each artwork since the label’s birth in late 2013, Jamie Paton. Having gone on to release for label peers and inspirations, ESP Institute and Multi Culti, this is a welcome return. Paton’s trademark deep dubwise is ever present, as is the exemplary programming, but now the twist of breaks in Remix form gives this EP widescreen dynamics.

The sound system stretching Dub mix rounds off, the vocals pulled back, the wobble and trembling bass, again highlight Especial’s mission, club music for the head and feet, mixing new wave with neu rave, beats with breaks, looking back but always, always moving forwards.

Odopt & Sano - Picha (Jamie Paton Remix)

The 'Sail We Must' EP by Irish producer Signa Rust draws inspiration from Alfos, reflecting a mutual appreciation for slower-paced sounds around the 100/110bpm mark. Crafted primarily with analog gear, it's a track that embodies hope and is dedicated to Signa's late father. The saying "fail we may, sail we must," an old fisherman's adage, resonates throughout the work, honoring his lifelong career in the industry. The opening track unfolds with a 303 and a uniquely twisted synth arp, then shifts gears with the introduction of strings, infusing the piece with a sense of hope and serene joy. '13.0 TeV' begins with the characteristic 808 percussion sounds, mingled with dubby samples that create a Rastafarian ambiance, followed closely by the 303's simmering acidity, before escalating with a distorted pad sequence. The EP concludes with Will Flisk's remix of '13.0 TeV'.

The masters of weirdness-meets-the-dance-floor A-Tweed (SXDNS222) & Oltrefuturo joined forces one more time. The occasion: The first batch of remixes for The Dude Of Stratosphear’s brand-new endeavour, to be released very soon on his own Sphearic Records.

Hailing from the paradisiacal Koh Chang, Thailand, The Dude spares no effort in order to combine cosmic elements with native sounds to unpack an interesting kaleidoscopic sonority. He selected a few of his works and invited some friends from different galaxies to come up with new colours for his themes. For the starting volume of the series, Doctrina Natura, A-Tweed X Oltrefuturo, and Krokakai were the chosen ones.

Released originally in August 2022, “Hartal” was turned into a weird chuggy acid classic through the addition of the characteristic slow-burning groovy madness of the duo. Tribal percussive incursions paired with deep ghostly pads brought us back to twenty-something years ago when a young dinosaur was eagerly having his weekly dose of haunting tales narrated over “phantasmagoric and eerie electronic music cuts” on an ahead-of-its-time show called “Visagem” on Rádio Cultura. Good memories!

@sordid-sound-system made a storming entrance on Special place by remixing Treasure Island's track 'No Loss'. He returns to the label with his own productions, showing his mastery in the assembly of sonic atmospheres. Every element seems to fall right into place.

This EP is the closest that Sordid has come to flirting with the 1980s. Throughout its duration, you can hear the sonic imprint of early 80s neo-noir cinema such as Bladerunner, Scarface, and Escape From New York.

'I Dream Of Electric Sheep' delivers Sordid's so-called 'motorik dub', one foot in disco, one foot in the Caribbean, with a nod to Compass Point classics by the likes of Talking Heads and Grace Jones. Like the rest of this EP, these qualitative sounds called for a stellar remixer. With close to a hundred remixes under the belt for artists ranging from Radiohead to Isolée or Romanthony and a massive catalogue of productions that dared to leave dance music for ambient sonic explorations, @Ripperton was the perfect pick.

His reimagining of 'I Dream of Electric Sheep' transports us into daring dreamlike realms of rhythmic exploration, Deckard's beat-up Spinner escapes the smog of the dystopian city for the clouds high above.

'The Great Psychic Outdoors' is a masterpiece imbued with the DNA of the bastard lovechild of John Carpenter and The Cure. One of those tracks you could play on a tape loop for hours. Born from the chaos of a sleepless coastal city, Seekers captures the fractured poetry of urban drift — soft and hazy one moment, tangled and dense the next. Built from field recordings, found tones, and analogue synth fragments, it feels like a collection of dream fragments from the in-between: half memory, half mirage.

Closing the release, Mozes reimagines one of the EP’s key pieces through a dub-rooted lens — a meditative descent into echo and weight, where bass becomes landscape and delay turns to dialogue.

Gats is an electronic music producer and performer from Berlin, Germany, known for a unique style that blends elements of psychedelic rock, dub, and Balearic sounds to create music that is both relaxing and danceable.
