Q. How long have you been a part of the NYC music scene?
A. 2010 is when I met my idols (Venus X, Shannon Funchess, and Lauren Flax) and DJ'd at Home Sweet Home.

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. My love for 90s techno records feels inescapable and ever expanding. I got a number of new records over the last year from a 90s collection sold at Brooklyn Record Exchange so this has some of those and some that have been in my collection for many years. I initially got in to these loopy fast techno records because they were so unpopular and cheap and it has been interesting to see them become so popular again and a rise of people caring about the history and who made them. I'm sure many of the artists think it's silly that I have attached myself to their pasts. Shout out to Tracy and Ren who are maybe the only two people that get me in this regard. Shout out to Akilah Bryant who made very few but such incredible techno records, one of which is in here. "As a DJ, I have been more and more interested to play more percussive based tracks, giving me more freedom to navigate genres. But recently, I have got the chance to muscle up my game a bit more on some techno dancefloors, and I really enjoy playing with this kind of energy. So this podcast is a bit a reflection of these experiences. The track selection contains some unreleased tracks of mine and others."

The Cover Mix: rRoxymore

Emma Blake is, musically, something of a nomad. She made her name—Solid Blake—that is, in Copenhagen, where she cofounded the influential Apeiron Crew alongside Mama Snake and Smokey. They were responsible in establishing the city's "fast techno" sound, which blended sleek techno and trance influences into something colourful and retro-futuristic. But Blake's side of things was always more rooted in electro, with a party-starting flair that you might be tempted to pin to her Glaswegian upbringing. (Her first release, <i>Mario</i>, came out on the label of the legendary Glasgow taps-aff basement nightclub La Cheetah.) And she's also spent time in Berlin, so she has those techno bona fides, too.

Another EP, released on Modeselektor's Seilscheibenpfeiler, further fleshed out her electro-techno hybrid sound, also explored in her Historical Repeater project with Danish artist Ctrls. DJing has been her major focus, though—she has an excellent Rinse FM show—and you'll hear a refined approach on her excellent RA Podcast, which is like a club set in miniature, starting out midtempo and rushing towards a heady climax with tracks like Pariah's "Squishy Windows." It's loaded with creative grooves, toothsome textures and the kind of sleek melodies that helped define her stint in Copenhagen since the beginning.

Techno Ruined My Life: The Hostile Ambient Takeover Mix (Excerpt)

Here at Dekmantel we are a big fan of Berlin based Brit Objekt. Evidence: you will see him play our festival in Amsterdam as well as Lente Kabinet, and then Dekmantel Selectors in Croatia. And right now, the man known for his unrivalled technical nous is in a fine run of form. His recent, self-released EP is another testament to his ability to skew house, techno and breaks into his own imaginative forms. Following on from releases on Hessle Audio, Bleep and an album on PAN, it is another boon in his fine discography. 

And he is just as impressive across a 90 plus minute selection for us: it finds him serving up a cavernous world of intricate and hi fidelity sounds that are abstract and unusual. Moving through sparse minimal soundscapes into pummelling but atmospheric drum tracks and on to jungle, dub and experimental worldly rhythms, it is a wildly compelling and singular selection filled with unusual sounds that often leaving you wondering WTF?!

No Way Back: Streaming From Beyond

A 36+ hour take on No Way Back, with 24 hours of the No Way Back room residents and 12+ hours of the Outer Space room immediately following. An excess of the mindmelting wormhole dance experience followed by many hours of floating in space and beyond. When we considered podcasting some sets, we decided to just release them all, one week at a time, in an order different than their original broadcast, with the concept of bringing further ideas with the continuum to light.

For us the toughest moment of the pandemic shut down was the thought that we could not gather on Memorial Day weekend for our annual rite of No Way Back. We need our community now more than ever, to connect and to feel free, in a world of shifting real and unreal realities, sequestered in isolation, how can we get together? Time feels different now, we have more patience for everything, so we applied that space for exploration to the sets at No Way Back, extending them to 3 hours so the DJs can fully explore their ideas.

The Electrifyin' Mojo would say "if you reach the end of your rope, just tie a knot and don’t let go" and this stream and podcasts are our knot. This was the first ever NWB without a defined space, without the transformational art of Amber Gillen and crew, let's hope we can get together in the future safely. Grab a little bit of netting or a parachute, turn on some red lights, move into another dimension. Please stay safe and live to dance another day.

Here’s the recording of my Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1, which I recorded at the start of 2020 and was broadcast in June. Feeling like I’d been given some big shoes to fill, I spent a couple of months planning a rambunctious, high-energy party mix that would also still be pretty ambitious in the range of styles and tempos it would cover, finally finishing it just as the first lockdowns were kicking in. Obviously, by the time it was eventually broadcast it felt a little out of step with the times. But listening back to it I still feel like it’s one of my better studio mixes, and with the holidays (and a vaccine) around the corner maybe its energy will even feel newly appropriate. So in case you missed the official broadcast – or wanted a download – here it is.
