Alma Mitchell Field Recording: Eastern Koel
The Eastern Koel (Eudynamys orientalis) is a species of large cuckoo that flies from south-east Asia to northern and eastern Australia in the spring (September). It is an occasional visitor as far south as Melbourne. Once it arrives in its suburban habitat, it makes itself known by hiding in a tree near your bedroom window and calling loudly and endlessly in the early morning. Some people consider this behaviour annoying, but it was one of Alma's favourite bird calls. This recording was found on an unmarked tape, but it is likely to have been made in suburban Nunawading, probably in the 1970s or 1980s.
