Balvinder Dosanjh - World Maternal Mental Health Day 2021

In this episode of the Bristol Distinguished Address Series, we feature a unique conversation between Andrew Kelly (Bristol Ideas) and internationally renowned Bristol land artist, sculptor, and UWE Bristol alum, Sir Richard Long. This special event is presented in collaboration with the UK’s national festival of the humanities, Being Human 2024, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year with the theme of "Landmarks.

One of Bristol’s most illustrious and thought-provoking artists, Richard Long has made his name making art by walking in landscapes – over the most extraordinary of distances and timeframes, and often through remote and challenging environments. Long attended the West of England College of Art (1962-1965) – now part of UWE Bristol. Since that time, he has had his photographs of artworks, sculptures made along his walks and textworks exhibited from as close as the Arnolfini in Bristol, to as far Ottawa, Sydney, Tokyo and, most recently, Rio. Andrew Kelly talks to Long about what really drives his long solo walks through landscapes – and the art that is inspired by them.

Andrew Kelly was Director of Bristol Ideas 1993-2024. His projects included Festival of Ideas, Brunel 200, Festival of the Future City, We The Curious, the Great Reading Adventures and Encounters Film Festival. He is the author/ editor of many books on Hollywood history, the future of cities, and Brunel. Over the past 15 years he has interviewed more than 400 artists, writers, poets, scientists, politicians, journalists and commentators.

This event is part of the Bristol Distinguished Address Series (BDAS) and Being Human Festival, the UK’s national festival of the humanities, taking place 7–16 November 2024. Led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London, with generous support from Research England, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy.

Sir Richard Long, Bristol land artist and sculptor | Bristol Distinguished Address Series

In this episode of the Bristol Distinguished Address Series, we hear from Co-op Group's CEO and UWE Bristol alum, Shirine Khoury-Haq, as she shares her ideas on the values that underpin good business. This was the final event held as part of the Autumn BDAS series of 2024.

Shirine is Group CEO at Co-op, the first female Chief Executive in the company’s 180-year history and the first from an ethnic minority background. Shirine has been a Director on the Co-op Board since joining in 2019 – first as Chief Financial Officer, later becoming Chief Executive Officer Life Services, leading Co-op Funeralcare, Insurance and Legal Services.  

Before joining the Co-op, Shirine was Chief Operating Officer for the Lloyd’s insurance market, which comprised of more than 50 leading insurance companies operating in over 200 countries. She also led the digital modernisation programme for the wider London insurance industry.  
In addition to holding senior positions at IBM, McDonalds and insurer, Catlin Group, Shirine has worked in a number of regulated sectors in the UK and overseas including retail, IT, pharmaceuticals and consumer goods.

Hosting the event was Rachel Evans, Head of Alumni Engagement for UWE Bristol. Her role is focussed on building affinity and pride in UWE amongst the alumni community alongside creating opportunities for our alumni network to support current students. Rachel studied Law at UWE and so is a member of the alumni community herself. She was delighted to be hosting this BDAS event and to be in conversation with such an inspiring fellow alum!

Danielle Mulder, BBC Group Director of Sustainability | Bristol Distinguished Address Series

Dr. Praveen Kumar, Associate Professor in Stroke Rehabilitation and Physiotherapist at UWE Bristol joins us in this episode to talk about his work in the field of stroke rehabilitation and the development of robotic telepresence and how it can support people at home with the exercises and social interaction.  Robotic telepresence is a mobile robotic platform, and through this robot, participants can join live group exercise classes led by a remote instructor. They see the instructor on a screen, the instructor sees them, and they can interact in real time.

Let's Talk Health and Care Podcast Ep#3: Stroke rehabilitation and the development of robotic telepresence

This special BDAS event celebrated the remarkable life and achievements of Dr Guy Bailey. Within this, Dr Roger Griffith MBE and guests shared the story of Guy Bailey, his pivotal role in the 1963 Bristol Boycott and who, after a degree at UWE Bristol, founded the first Black housing association in the South West. The evening was a tribute to Dr Bailey and proved a powerful demonstration of the value of community engagement in academia. 

The evening started with an address by UWE Bristol Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Steve West. A panel discussion followed, featuring UWE Bristol staff, Amy Saleh, Malcolm Richards and Professor Shaun Sobers, exploring how life-long learning in academia can empower communities. Current Student Union Presidents Lubyna Gardezi and Kolawole Olure then discussed their educational journey as international students, with former UWE Bristol student Xavier Baker, who is now a UWE staff member and engaged on community projects. Julz Davis CEO of Curiosity UnLtd then talked about the legacy of the Bristol Bus Boycott and his activism to engage young people. The evening concluded with UWE Bristol Professor Emmanuel Adukwu speaking on the Celebrating Excellence project. Finally, Miles Chambers paid poetic tribute to Dr Bailey's legacy.

Changemaker podcast series: Emmanuel Adukwu

In this first Bristol Distinguished Address Series event of Spring 2025, Nick Hounsfield (Founder of The Wave) and Host, Maggy Blagrove (Founder of Open Minds Active) explored all things Blue Health. Nick shared his personal journey and vision for The Wave, the first inland surfing destination in the UK, a 26-million litre artificial wave pool powered by solar energy. Together with Maggy and guest adaptive surfer Stephen Lightbown, the three Speakers shared their fascinating insights about the positive effects that spending time in water can bring – and how more of us can (and should) access the benefits of Blue Health. 
 
Nick is the founder of The Wave - a 'slice of the ocean' in a field in Bristol, where anyone and everyone can surf all year round. It brings the physical and mental health benefits of water, waves and nature to people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities - from a child stepping on a board for the first time, to a professional training for the Olympics.  
 
The project was 10 years in the making and Nick’s journey from osteopath with £500 and a vision, to making it a £35 million reality, is an inspiring tale of grit and resilience. Nick is on the board of Surfing England and has been particularly involved in supporting and growing the profile of the para-surfing community. This resulted in the English team winning a record number of medals at the World Adaptive Surf Championships and The Wave hosting the English Adaptive Surfing Open competition. Nick was also part of the prestigious UK Sport International Leadership Programme. 
 
Maggy is the director and founder of Open Minds Active CIC, a Bristol-based social impact organisation dedicated to making swim-based activities accessible across Bristol. The organisation helps people connect with nature in blue spaces to enhance mental wellbeing and reduce social isolation. 
 
Maggy holds a Master’s in International Development and has over 20 years of experience in sport and community development. Throughout her career she has led numerous sport-for-social-change initiatives across the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, Ireland and the UK, using physical activity to engage disadvantaged youth and marginalised communities in post-conflict settings. An experienced open water swimmer and coach, Maggy is passionate about tackling health inequalities and enabling more people to access and enjoy the outdoors. 
 
Stephen Lightbown is a Bristol-based poet, children’s author; yoga teacher and adaptive surfer. Stephen uses his poems to give a voice to his disability and is the author of three poetry collections; and in 2026 his first children’s picture book will be published. When he is not writing Stephen can be found surfing and is a passionate advocate for the power of blue health. He has represented England twice at the ISA World Para Surf Championships in California and helped Team England to a fourth-place finish at the 2023 World Championships.
