Lyra Valenza set the tone for their first full-length album ‘Low Gear No Pressure’ with an idyllic ambience, which then tumbles into feisty, heartfelt dance workouts. Across eight tracks, the Danish duo explore the pixellated euphoria of their previous ‘Scan, Deliver’ and ‘Nightshade Edition’ EPs with a more focused sensitivity. 

At the start of 2020, Lyra Valenza had been freshly nominated by music platform SHAPE. With the pandemic in hand, however, plans changed: instead of playing a slew of festivals, the duo spent weeks in a summer house in rural Sjælland, right at Denmark’s North Eastern coast, making early versions of the tracks in this album. ‘Low Gear No Pressure’ refers to the unusual calmness of that time, away from music industry stress and burnout; inspired by friendship. 

More than previous EPs, the album is shaped by the duo’s live set, which they’ve been performing in Denmark and Europe for many years now. The album breezes through different modes with confidence and ease, tracks morphing fluidly into one another to create a cohesive listening experience. 

A cool, expansive breakbeat on track two, ‘True Computer’, hints at the psychoactive journey to follow. ‘Truthwork’ plays with arps over a half time groove: subtle synths which reach their final form in ‘Joy Divided’. These agile swells and drops recall peers-in-precision Minor Science and 96 Back. 

On the flip, ‘Gameshow’ looks back over one shoulder to eurodance, while ‘Life on the Line’ goes out to the soulful junglists, but with a touches of trance in the samplework. On ‘Who Might Win’, the album’s ecstatic hyperactiveness melts into a slo-mo heartbeat, reminding us there’s a chillout room somewhere in the building. And just when we think it’s time to go home, the album gifts us with “one more tune”, and the soaring pop vocals of featured artist Saltmother on ‘Stretch Your Arms’.

Rhizome releases the compilation album Hypersea inspired by hydro feminism and becoming a body of water.

The Copenhagen/Berlin based label Rhizome releases a compilation album inspired by the writer Astrida Neimanis. On the album you’ll be presented to a wide range of the Copenhagen underground from artists such as Messell to Varnrable.

Friday September 1st 2023 Rhizome releases and celebrates the compilation album Hypersea. The compilation album takes its point of departure with the text ‘Hydrofeminism - Or, On Becoming a Body of Water’ by Astrida Neimanis and contains 18 tracks from the Copenhagen underground scene apart from a track from New York namely Laenz who earlier this year released a double single on the label. In each way the artists have interpreted the text by Neimanis and worked with its topics such as water, fluid borders and feminism.

Alto Aria about the album: “With the current threat of a watering ban in Denmark, increasing pollution and lack of water all over the world, we zoom in on water with this album. We wish to follow Neimanis’ thread about water and feminism – she teaches us that we and our identity, like the fluid borders of the oceans, always are negotiable and never fixed. With the compilation we celebrate water and its essential role in our lives. Whether it is through the lens of clean drinking water, an identity in flux, dying fish, the western pollution level or something completely different, we wish this album to be a reflection over and a get together around what we all depend on.”

The album has become a sonic collage of a watery quest, fast footsteps, shifting and fragmented choir pieces, broken beats and hearts, soothing synthesisers, harsh wind, caring bodies, uplifting beats, polyphonic saxophones and long reverbs. Hypersea is curated by Alto Aria and presents works by Hôy la, ilinx, Saltmother, Julia Becker, ill, Angel Wei, Lyra Valenza, Faber, Jason Lee, Bysund, Holger Seidelin, Astrid Nørgaard, KRY, Laenz, Varnrable, Messell, Skarv and Alto Aria.

Rhizome is a Copenhagen/Berlin based label started in 2020 by Aria Leth Schütze and Mads Krue Bugge. The primary focus of the label is experimental electronic music and alternative release formats. Rhizome has released music by artists such as Alto Aria, Skarv, Swell, Polly, Nemo, ioulus, Laenz, Ida Urd, and ill as well as the compilation album bag/belly/box. The latest podcast sees Petrola 80 bosses @lyravalenza take a restrained approach while placing specific focus on their local Copenhagen scene.

A collaboration between longstanding friends Jens Konrad and Hjalte Lehman, the LV blueprint transcends genre. It’s day-glo rave ordnance that draws from eurodance, techno and the so-called hardcore continuum – nostalgic and undeniably fwd-facing at once.

Distilling the euphoria of their live sets into 8 distinct tracks, debut full-length ‘Low Gear No Pressure’ spanned everything from blissed ambience to precision-tooled breakbeats and trance-tinged jungle. Dipping into downtempo territory for the first time, it also represented a broadening of their already eclectic palette, and this mix certainly continues in that vein.
 
“Our recent DJ appearances and mixes have been hazy peak-hour sets, so here, we wanted to dive a little deeper and explore slower BPMs and tracks we rarely get the chance to play out, combined with tunes we usually play in the beginning of our sets. It’s also the first time we chose to work with a strict gender balance between the featured artists and producers. And as usual we focused on the booming Copenhagen scene, this time including local artists such as Gavnlig, Muskila, Capitana, DJ Paydar and Mbizo.” – Lyra Valenza

In 28 songs and more than two hours of music ”I Am Here Now, When Will You Be Here Again?” presents a multitude of expressions. An empty holiday retreat, a portrait of a season’s end. Echoes of emotion, laughter in the background, someone cried here too. Sandalwood scent or patchouli, rain pools gathering on the piled up daybeds, it is colder now. If the storm comes, i’ll let myself get carried away too. I am here now, when will you be here again? 

The compilation is presented digitally and as a limited set of cassettes out late October “I Am Here Now, When Will You Be Here Again?” is the newest addition to a lineage of Posh Isolation compilations. Sung in voices of today it echoes a past cry; 

“Give me a mask to put my face in. A mask to put over my other mask. What do I care if some curious person sees my flaws? Let this mask, with its black eyebrows, blush for me.”

Lyra Valenza is the project of Jens Konrad Barrett and Hjalte Lehmann, who've been putting out music since 2017. Having explored a variety of different styles and aesthetics over the years, they have since established themselves as a unique act in the contemporary electronic scene due to their singular and catchy blend of genres such as jungle, trance and techno – distilled into their very own sound. That Lyra Valenza’s sound is truly special is also evident from the recognition they’ve received from a diverse field of other acclaimed artists. Through the years, they’ve been supported by the likes of Caroline Polachek, Bill Kouligas, Courtesy and Rroxymore, who have played their music on different occasions. Their releases and high-energy live performances have also resulted in them being selected for the prestigious SHAPE Platform in 2020 as well as gaining them an ongoing residency at LYL Radio with their own label, Petrola 80. In addition to their radio show at LYL, they’ve also made mixes for, among others, Resident Advisor, NTS Radio, Rinse FM and Inverted Audio.

2023 saw the release of their long-awaited debut album, Low Gear No Pressure, which was released on Petrola 80, after having put out music on compilations through internationally acclaimed labels such as Courtesy's imprint Kulør, Opal Tapes and Posh Isolation. The album is a culmination of the many musical aesthetics on their previous releases and shows the group’s ability to create both energetic and addictive bangers as well as more laidback club tracks, always with a clear understanding of the synergy between the different compositions. Lyra Valenza is currently working on an ambitious international project, which is to be announced in late 2023, as well as two new releases. The duo is available for both DJ- and live-sets in 2024.

Where Vol. 1 gathered familiar faces within the realms of ambient and drone, the second instalment edges closer towards the dancefloor. Proper hybrid biz and our pick takes exactly the kind of genre-agnostic approach we’ve come to expect from the duo.

Ascending to a higher plane, ‘It’s The Vibe’ achieves its widescreen quality setting trap drums against choral harmony and beatific synth. Sublime stuff.

Danish duo @lyravalenza (aka Hjalte and Jens Konrad) operates on the outskirts of contemporary electronic dance music. Armed with a playful approach and a patchwork of digital and analogue equipment, Lyra Valenza carved their own space in the Copenhagen scene by genre-blending Jungle, UK Garage, and Footwork into a mix of forward-facing and euphoric dance music for 2020 and beyond. A testament to the duo's unique approach to sound design, they were selected for this year's SHAPE - a platform for innovative music and audiovisual art from Europe.

Lyra Valenza's latest EP, Nightshade Edition, is a package of sweet and dangerous cuts to the taste of dystopian romance. The prime dance floor material hits with metallic percussion and bursts of fluttering synths tuned with just the right amount of trance. From stepping UKG, to lush digital soundscapes, the four breaks heavy tracks are hyper-modern sonic experiments processed through a retrospective haze.

The Nightshade Edition EP is released on Lyra Valenza's own @petrola-80 label. It follows their 2018 debut EP "Scan Deliver" on UK imprint Opal Tapes and comes as a welcome return from the energetic producers.

This dense and structured mix won’t let you rest for a moment and immerse you in rhythmic, synthetic madness with occasional elegant atmospheric undercurrents bristling like a cool wind in some Nordic urban landscape. The breezy ambience of Merdh Laleh and sci-fi drones of Xenia Xamanek are followed by the spacious and vivid experimental garage of Yelzin or the aquatic bubble-gum jungle of DJ Sports. Thus the narrative is consistent and adventurous, including sharp, unpredictable twists. The dynamics of the mix reflect the vision of Lyra Valenza, Petrola 80 and their future aesthetic endeavours.
