
After an attempt at a rhythmic centric motif, which proved difficult to articulate as I intended, I decided to approach this melodically. This was counterintuitive to my usual process, I never construct compositions around melodic content.

I noted that conceptual motifs were legitimate, incorporating cryptography and steganography thematically could be considered a Leit Motif. I often use non-audio sources in my compositions, images, text etc. I enjoy the area where cryptography and music meet.

However my attempts at a cryptographic based composition using my usual creative processes became too elaborate and abstracted and were not articulating the motive in the fashion of the suggested techniques/criteria. 

I began again favouring simplicity for the key melodic content. Using the "French method" of enciphering text into notes, I transposed the word MOTIF into a 5 note melody (F,A,F,B,F) I made 6 iterations of this melody over six (stereo) channels looping at varying resolutions (1/2 notes, 1/4 notes etc) then experimented with harmonising these phrases with each other, using different variations of a similar synth patch and panning the channels. I imported a screenshot of the sequence (see left) into audacity and then exported it as a wav file, loaded into a sampler again playing the same sequence and experimented with some settings, automation and effects to create some glitchy percussive layers as a means of creating new timbral elements that were emergent from the chosen motif.

I then experimented with longer note durations using this melody, which  formed the main section you hear at 1:34.

I resisted adding the drums to this section for a while, trying other ideas to compliment this phrase, but in the end conceded and added the basic halftime pattern you hear in the track to carry the melody along.

Being a fairly unenergetic phrase, I used a faster plucked melody for the focus of the next section, syncopating the drums to match the rhythm.

The 5 note melody created some interesting polyrhythms when played simultaneously by different instruments at varying speeds. I let the interplay of these looped phrases govern some of the composition, inserting different edits of the phrase into sections of the track and altering some of the patterns by reversing the sequence and altering the loop length.

I used an automated filter and delay on one of channels to turn one of the unnecessary melodic layers into a rhythmic layer that alternates between halftime and double time to mediate the rest of the elements, giving slower melodic sections a sense of pace to keep the track engaging.

I created a pad for the largest note resolution sequence, as this made the most sense and allowed that sequence to be layered over all other elements.

I used most of the suggested techniques in the composition of this track, key techniques were: Repetition, Rhythmic variation, Spatial variation / diffusion, Fragmentation (To a certain extent), Retrograde (Some phrasing was mirrored to create new rhythms/harmonies) & Textural variation (most instrument channels remain static
though the variation in texture occurs across the the instruments used)

Techniques that were not explored deeply were Displacement and Inversion. This was most likely due to the focus on creating a coherent composition from the initial elements , both of these techniques are largely for subversion (for the listener and the composer)

Project 1: Sound & Vision Exercise (15%) + Reflection (10%) Due week 4 (August 12)

Reflection:

Selected this piece as it matched my sound palette best. Big reeses and granular with glitchy distortions interrupting the movement in the darkness. First attempt at scoring a piece, discovered the process is even more akin to painting than my usual compositional process. Cherry picking events in the piece as points to build around filling the detail outwardly between points. Rewarding definitely. 90% of the source material created from my own sound library. I used some kicks from a pack while sketching that worked instantly, so I rolled with them. If the project required me to use strictly my own sample library I could have synthesised these sounds pretty easily. Same goes for the 2 field recordings I used from a pack. I could have gone to the kitchen with my h4N if needed.

I used Ableton 9 to compose, using 37 channels of audio, a single reverb send/return, barely any compression or insert effects, filtering or EQ. I relied primarily on the more effective tools of volume, panning and layered arrangement. I find working using the approach infintely more effective with this many channels of audio. To create some of the movement in the later section I layered a fast LFO on a bandpass filter unsynced to tempo, I set the rate by altering it while watching the video. I definitely could have achieved a cleaner tighter mix with more diligence - but I really wanted to avoid mix purgatory for this task and move quickly through the process.

While mixing I had some of the tonal non foley elements solo'd and found taking all of the foley out of the mix actually really compelling. I could have built on this and taken this piece in an entirely different direction, this more subtle tone would have also been entirely suitable. This "less is more" mentality would have made this ~24 second piece feel more like a short film than a drum and bass/videogame trailer. More expression is required for a more subtle approach, though I thoroughly enjoyed the engineering aspect of building foley for abstract forms.

Here's a quick demo composition i made with the Mechanical Molecules Sample Pack.

The 'Mechanical Molecules SD' Sample Pack is a hand-picked selection of 126 meticulously constructed & heavily mangled; royalty-free, original sound-design samples by Melbourne glitch artist Desiseq. This unique collection of idiosyncratic sounds was spawned from a live gestural sound design experiment; utilizing a simple 4/4 kick pattern in conjunction with live processing, automation & granular synthesis generating textures akin to circuitry malfunction, robotic gibberish, cartoon sfx, static electricity, water, bubbles, modular pulses and warped field-recordings of ambient spaces.

Zek Duci Phylaxis is an arbitrary yet intricate exploration of sound design with self imposed limitations.

Both artists set themselves the task of creating each track only from a series of foley recordings Lysdexic had made.

Restrictions were placed on instruments that could be utilised, primarily Samplers / audio processing and Wavetables made only from the original foley.

The result is two relatively contrasting tracks, rich with texture and nuance but both revealing a surprising level of semblance to traditional electronic timbres & form found in contemporary electronic bass music.

If your curiosity runs deeper you can download the original sounds here and hear them before their mutilation.
Raw sounds have been truncated and loosely categorised but otherwise untouched.
