We’re still harvesting the fruits of those past days in seclusion, the cabin fever induced creative outbursts, ideas that would probably have never surfaced without these enforced trips to our inner minds. Lockdown transcendence.

“Don’t Cry” by Italo-Brazilian DJ producer Stephan Barnem and Futuristant is another impressive testament of those days. Secluded in Stephan’s studio in Northern Italy, the duo subconsciously conjured the spirits of one of their mutual favorite bands, Depeche Mode and created a fierce, boombappy Neo New Wave smasher contrived to send rays of hope into the darkest corners of this mad world. We had to add a gratuitous beatless version to the EP that amplifies the cinematic depth and healing potency of this song.

If “Don’t Cry” echoes the dark brooding euphoria of Depeche Mode’s “Music For The Masses” era, the flipside cut “Elysium” harks back to the synthwave happy days of their debut “Speak & Spell”. It’s a wonderfully careless track that’s bringing a dearly needed breeze of fresh air to today’s discerning dancefloors.

One of the compilations of 2023 "Curses' Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX" saw the Berlin-based Musician and DJ explore the darker side of club music, bringing together 49 tracks that joined the dots between early Industrial pioneers, EBM legends, and Post-punk bands with some of the most exciting artists around today.
But it was not over, Curses still kept something special from his clubland's gothic vaults, and here is the encore "Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX - Secret Cuts", with 11 bonus tracks that all deserve their own moment in the strobe light, featuring the likes of Ghost Cop, Paresse, Nuovo Testamento, You Man, plus a new Curses track and Redux version, making Secret Cuts a worthy companion piece.

Following his triumphant return to Kompakt with SICKO (KOMPAKT 322), REX THE DOG digs deeper into the circuits of his custom-built modular synth on YOU ARE A BLADE, delivering a powerful trio of sharply contoured jams ready to cut to the chase. A true master of expressive might within a limited set of sounds, the much-acclaimed producer introduces the title track with breezy, shimmering arpeggios that are soon joined by a weighty, throbbing bassdrum - a lean and mean stealth banger that stands as unwavering as it is playful. The flipside builds an impressive amount of momentum as muscular acid-fest MUSIK HYPNOTISES stakes out raw and pounding synth stabs with its titular refrain, giving those straight-shooting riffs a properly wonked-out feel. Meanwhile, dry-witted closer WASP FACTORY pairs raspy synths with kinetic drum rolls and boldly cut-up vocal samples, another deceptively simple arrangement trimmed to perfection and for maximum effect.

Ein echter Meister expressiver Durchschlagskraft inmitten eines limitierten Klangsets, führt der hochgelobte Produzent mit luftig-schillernden Arpeggios an den Titeltrack heran, zu denen sich bald eine gewichtige, pochende Bassdfrum gesellt - ein schlanker Tarnkappenbomber, der ebenso standfest wie verspielt daher kommt. Die B-Seite baut mit der muskulösen Acidparty MUSIK HYPNOTISES beeindruckenden Schwung auf: raues Synthie-terrain wird vom namensgebenden Refrain abgesteckt und gibt dem Ganzen einen angemessen verpeilten Einschlag. Derweil verbandelt der lakonische Abschluss-Schieber WASP FACTORY kratzende Keyboards mit wirbelnden Trommeln und forsch zerlegten Vocal- Samples - ein weiteres täuschend einfaches Arrangement, passgenau zurechtmoduliert und auf maximalen Effekt getrimmt.
