Deep Water - Nguyen Xinh Xo

This week's TANK mix, an instrumental offering from London-based producer CAJM, is a study in controlled cacophony. Inspired by the rhythmic patterns of an embroidery machine, CAJM's soundscapes span the last century of experimental music production, yet the result is claustrophobic in a decidedly 21st-century way. There is respite in occasional pockets of detuned, Satie-esque piano, yet the overarching mood is deliciously dense and unsettling. CAJM is a member of the synth-punk outfit Powerplant and has worked with like-minded wunderkinds Coby Sey and Dean Blunt.

This week's TANK Mix of downtempo dub and spirited nueva canción comes from Tara Clerkin Trio. Every genre thrown at the Bristolian noisemakers – avant-jazz, electronica, ambient – fails to fully capture their urbane, spatial timbre, a sensibility forged over the past decade of playing together in the Bristol noise scene. Their most recent release, the expansive single Exquisite Corpse 1, was released last year.

MICHAELBRAILEY presents a shrine to 'Southland Tales', the critically-panned sophomore epic from Donnie Darko-director Richard Kelly. The voices of Hollywood 00s stars Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Justin Timberlake, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Seann William Scott can be heard prophesying on the state of things in a world where porn is on TV, Iraq war veterans have amnesia, guns can bend around corners and quantum teleportation is top news. Leaning heavily on the film's Moby-led soundtrack this unusual mix scans, etches and chips away at the film's runtime to unearth what meaning or emotion lies beneath its strangely salacious surface.

Pour ce douzième volume, nous avons droit à la contribution de notre collaborateur, programmateur et matriceur @julienracine. Maître des textures et des rythmiques dissonantes, il s’est fait remarquer avec deux albums parus sur l’étiquette suisse @danse-noire-records: Quelque Chose Tombe (2020) et Amitiés (2022). Avec son comparse @keru-not-ever, il forme le duo Corporation, qui a fait paraître Graffito en 2019 et qui produit l’émission mensuelle Scène pour la @hkcrlive. Sa sélection, pour public averti seulement, ratisse large, passant du métal au jazz; il laisse entrevoir comment il réussit à réconcilier des sonorités aux extrêmes dans le reste de son œuvre.
