With an opening chorus that could easily trick one into thinking you were listening to a cover of an old classic song, “Aaja Re Moray Saiyaan” is an original, and an incalculably organic tune performed by Zebunnisa Bangash featuring Noori. Written by Zehra Nigah, the words flow around love in all its forms portraying the classic romantic sensibility, together with harmonies adding the depth and the infectious chorus running through the track’s veins. The composition and the music of “Sasu Mangay” immediately carry you to the desolate deserts of Rajasthan, where the folk song originated. Maneuvering between the contrasting territory of folk and soft rock genres, the collaboration calls Naseebo Lal and Umair Jaswal’s distinctive talents to the surface. Whilst the musicians and the house band lay the foundation comprising mouth rhythms and traditional instruments to create an addictive hook line – the acoustic rhythm of the track with Naseebo’s impeccable vocal range gently merge into the western chord progression when Jaswal’s beasty vocals make an appearance, gelling seamlessly into one another.

A fusion of an original track, written and composed by Haroon Shahid merged with the timeless tune, ‘Laung Gawacha’ sung by Musarrat Nazir – the song is heavily laced with big beats, paired with wild riffs and the perfect combination of influences. Ali Azmat takes the lead on the verses in his familiar pop-rock vocals, and as the song progresses the heartfelt voice of Javed Bashir grips one ever so tightly. The duos vocals work seamlessly together, as the house band graces the track with their precise and decisive contribution, and the humnawa provide repeating hook for the chorus – truly embracing the very essence of the Qawwali and capturing the soul of everyone that comes within its aural range.

‘Maula-e-Kull’, is a testament that less is more and no person more apt to recite this than the maestro, Abida Parveen. With minimal production by music director Shani Arshad and lyrics that pierce through the soul, penned by Sabir Zafar – the idea behind the composition was to have Abida sing this heartfelt prayer without a rhythm or tempo placing the expressivity of her vocal prowess at the forefront. Using the classical raag played on the Sarod and a sound bed of percussions, Abida enthralls the listener with her vocals that are strikingly immersive and instantly captivating. The track builds up to ‘Haidari-am’ – the poetry of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar – a part that was suggested during the jam session and composed by Abida Parveen. The segment opens with a bass line and transforms into a dhamaal using the dhol as a backbone to create the rhythms played at shrines utilizing the western instruments and a pop/rock feel. #CokeStudio9
