Uncaged Bird

The text of this motet emphasizes redemption and healing through penance. The motet was most likely first performed at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice, in a Mass of thanksgiving for the passing of the plague of 1575-77.  It calls for three distinct choirs, two vocal and one instrumental. In this arrangement, all three choirs are made up of brass instruments. The two original vocal choirs now use more mellow sounding brass instruments such as horn, flugelhorn and euphonium. The third original instrumental choir uses more edgy sounding brass instruments such as trumpet and trombone. In keeping with the practice of the time, an organ is used for the continuo part.

This music is a wonderful example of the “colossal baroque” style. The layout of St. Mark’s cathedral lends itself to answering and echoing choirs, sounding from different locations in the building. The huge volume of the building enhances and embraces massive musical sound. Gabrieli explored this to the full!
