Kostroma or Kupala — According to the folk tales and beliefs, some rituals can be traced, and their echoes can still be found in tué tales. For example, some cultures practiced the offering of a human sacrifice to “tame” the forest, the fields, or rivers. Kostroma or the “funeral of Kostroma” or Kupala — was a ritual in which an innocent girl, after being intoxicated with poppy wine, could be drowned or left to freeze in the winter cold. The purpose of this sacrifice was to protect the settlement from evil spirits and to honor them.
