It’s hard to think of a label as reliably great as Lillerne Tapes. Since launching in 2007, the cassette imprint has become an anchor of the lo-fi and experimental ambient music world, its output ranging from contemplative dance to musique concrète to more abstract productions, with releases from the likes of Forest Management, mdo, Rhucle and Ulla Straus, to name just a few.

The man behind the prolific label is Gabe Holcombe. In 2021, he’s already put out three excellent releases from José María Delgado, jung dj and more eaze, all of which are worth checking out. While the label still retains its local, DIY feel, Holcombe doesn’t just release his friends’ music. Last year, he also tapped into Australia’s underground scene, releasing music from Melbourne’s Yunzero and Other Joe.

The label’s varied discography serves as an illustration of Holcombe’s sound palette; it’s rich in warm, fuzzy textures, tape hiss and subtle, often beautiful melodies. His mix casts a similar spell. Most of the songs come from ambient tape labels circa 2012—“reliable favourites”, in his words. Over 50 plus minutes, he weaves together music from the likes of Bermuda Link, Hakobune and Motion Sickness of Time Travel, creating the aural equivalent of a warm blanket.

Theory Therapy 18: Lillerne Tapes

It’s a pleasure to pick up our podcast series again with one of the most peaceful and elegant mixes we’ve ever hosted on TSS. Our ears go to Sydney - Australia, where Dan and Gary have started the phenomenal Low End Theorists platform, and its recordlabel Theory Therapy. From there they are hosting music that we’ve fell in love with many of times and that’s why we are very honoured that Dan mixed an hour of his favourites for us, under his known moniker Patrin.

"For me, this mix is one of the more emotional directions I've taken lately. I've really enjoyed selecting certain tracks based on strong feelings or moods in recent times, and having the chance to record something personal has been so rewarding and revitalising. Much like the many ups and downs of the last few months locked down inside, it was super nice to strike a balance between the sadness, joy, calmness, and everything in between. Huge love to all the artists featured for the endless inspiration."

Following a golden thread of textured ambience and hypnotic, minimal percussion, Aerial traverses a jungle of emotions. 

Aerial invites us to explore vulnerable feelings, cushioned by a foundation of meditative sounds. Interwoven with influences of dub, New Age, psych rock and abstract ambience, this mix is a beautiful, hazy collage, perfect for quieter moments.

"No Way Back is a big part of my life — the music, the people, the ethos, the vibe. Being asked to play was the ultimate honor, and I knew I needed to share something focused and personal. There are many great records out in the world, but only a handful of artists who produce nothing *but* great records. Norm Chambers is one of them. There are oceans of texture, color, and depth within each release. The decision to dive deep and showcase only his music across two hours was obvious from the start. Glyn Maier is a sound artist and field recordist living in Pisgah Forest, North Carolina. Non-city outdoor spaces are essential to Maier’s practice. With a formal education in physics and
music composition, Maier’s preoccupations with natural objects, landscapes, and their social histories guide his recordings, which are then integrated into electronic works utilizing organic rhythms and complex timbres. Maier’s abstract synthesis work is deeply informed by sound design, but his larger focus is on the agency of both machine and environment. Another facet of Maier’s sonic practice is enmossed, the label he founded in 2017. Dedicated to contemporary sound, all profits are donated to positive causes of the artist’s choice, and materials for the tapes and records are hand-constructed out of recycled materials. Its catalogue is distributed internationally by shops such as Boomkat (UK), Rope Editions (Korea), and Tobira Records (Japan).

About the mix
The backbone of the mix is a segment of a longer vinyl DJ set I recorded utilizing a +/- 50% pitch range between two turntables recorded live on Halloween 2022. With an aim towards stretching sounds and favoring extended blends of tracks, the crossroads of fall and winter/past and future were melded into one, on a night deemed especially conducive to the intertwining of material and spirit.

That recording has found a new life through a dialogue with doris dana. In addition to editing the mix to fit the time-constraints of a radio program, dana also added live improvisations, dialogue snippets, and a few additional tracks.  dana has elevated this mix into a perennial listen, seasons stacked in superposition. The wheel is always turning, but this mix may place us at its hub for a moment.
