Performance note: Massoud El Amaratly was born to Moula Saad as a girl named Massouda in the small town of Amarah (province Maysan in southern Iraq). He preferred to dress, act and sing as a man. In Baghdad he became famous as a very skilled and innovate singer (very high and distinctive voice) and for the rendition of rifi songs (music from the countryside in southern Iraq). Side-B Music: Rifi song genre; the finger snapping is (iṣbi‘) is a favourite way to produce rhythmic figures in southern Iraq and links the song to the Arabic Bedouin tradition. The singer is supported by a chorus. Musical instruments are: violin, qānūn box zither, santūr (a hammered dulcimer), the lute ‘ūd and a drum (darbūkka?); finger snapping.
