“As long as I stared at the clock, at least the world remained in motion. Not a very consequential world, but in motion nonetheless. And as long as I knew the world was still in motion, I knew I existed. Not a very consequential existence, but an existence nonetheless. It struck me as wanting that someone should confirm his own existence only by the hands of an electric wall clock. There had to be a more cognitive means of confirmation. But try as I might, nothing less facile came to mind.”

Subtlety and class are what ultimately set apart certain techno releases from the multitude of records coming out each week. With this new four track EP on M_REC Ltd. Grey Series, Echologist (aka Brendon Moeller) skillfully incorporates a wide range of ideas, delivering an affective and fascinating piece of unconventional far out techno. 'Impossibility', the opening track, stands at the crossroad of dub techno and so-called mutant house, with its mean bass drum carrying a smooth analog melody through a field filled with sharp and trippy sounds, in a journey that is dark and sexy at the same time. 'Geographica' is more experimental, with its proggy and psychedelic sounds laid on a set of mutating beats traveling through rawness and distortion. Stuff that can only come out of real machines. On the flip side, 'Too Far Gong' is an oppressive and haunting track: dark spaced out electro. The closing track, 'Drug Company' remains on the same trajectory, but pusher things farther on an heavier dubby drumscape, taking advantage of the brain-liquifying properties of piercing sounds. Meant to belong in every dark and uncompromising set.

Since a few months of silence Indigo Aera returns with a series of new exiting releases. Kickstarting the new season with one of Parisian's finest: Antigone. Besides being a resident at Parisian's Concrete movement, Antigone is responsible for highly acclaimed releases on Construct Re-form and Ars Mechanica, Children Of Tomorrow and the Concrete label itself.

Antigone's signature sound is a fine blend of soul searching strings on top of cutting edge sci-fi techno rhythms as evidenced by the eerie and spine tingling 'Words Of Silences'. Next, 'Third From The Sun' is a much quicker and more frantic but just as smooth and deep techno cut with celestial pads and a heavenly sense of calm. On the b-side there's a straighter 4x4 remix from label heads Jasper Wolff and Maarten Mittendorff that offers plenty of bang for its buck.

BNJMN presents Body Reflections Pt.2 - the second step in his new, subdued and intricate sonic direction.

The EP opens with “Undulations”, an emotional number on which delayed rhythmic elements gradually introduce minor chords. “Lyra” is a slow burning march, offset with an offbeat clap, giving the track a stron sense of decay and disorder. 

On the flip, "Earth Shock” is an atmosphere laden piece starting with a sombre, slow melody that gets increasingly drowned out by harsh, industrial textures. The piece eventually reaches power electronics territory before returning to its onset. 

“Severance” is a tense affair. Layered synths meet stuttered kicks. Metallic stabs come puncturing and piercing rimshots provide rhythmic clarity. The EP closes with the fluttering and delightfully ghastly "Ghost Faction". 

Body Reflections Pt.2 is deeply illustrative of BNJMN’s ability for creating nuanced and delicately balanced layers, and a culmination of his vast experience.

Mysterious newcomer Banke delivers a profound debut for TOKEN81. The Totem EP's tempered sophistication and clear sense of purpose belies Banke's neophyte status, establishing him instead in the ranks of Token's most experienced artists in terms of skill and ingenuity. 

Simenon's tense introduction is met with understated, yet unmistakable fragments of Detroit in the form of a hypnotic, high-end glissando, rolling drum work and built-up tasteful stabs. Cheerlead's delicate trill is mimicked and answered in a hypnotic call-and-response over a carefully measured low-end. 

Totem, the title track, has a traditionalist opening that's purposeful and composed, with Banke patiently building tension through his crafty and artful arrangement. An oddball breakdown of mind-bending synth work places the record firmly in the avant-garde, while its detailed percussion retains dancefloor functionality. Strattera's hyper-focused mid and off-beat brushing hi-hat opens out to become disorienting, multi-layered trip.

When not helming his own imprints, SCKT and Pattern Research, the Düsseldorf artist has been releasing on Rekids since 2015 and is now a core member of the label’s family. Earlier this year saw the arrival of ‘New Life EP’, a mesmerising release exemplary of the producer’s knack for making imaginative house and techno complete with a compelling groove. No stranger to the long player format having released two albums previously, Markus Suckut returns to Radio Slave’s label with a quality eleven track album.

From the word go Suckut’s album demonstrates his versatility as a musician, initiating with a beatless intro named ‘Escape’, before ‘Breeze’ comes into play with its skipping percussion and loopy atmospherics. Crunchy snares and crystalline synths make up ‘Sun’s Out’ whilst ‘Future Is Not Always Bright’ drives forward with its sultry low-end, ethereal pads and sci-fi bleeps, leading into ‘Take A Break’ and its medley of elaborate drums, living up to its name.

‘Above The Clouds’ is comprised of intricate notes and soothing chords whilst the machinelike ‘Orchid’ features electro inspired melodies, contrasting to the album’s title track, ‘Heaven Is A State Of Mind’, with its bumpy bass and warping textures. ‘Wonderland (Version)’ is a ghostly acid cut, moving into the syncopated and ominous ‘We Will All Disappear One Day’ and its purring bassline until a moody two-step number entitled ‘Death Is Not Final’ ties it all together with twisted sequences and trippy effects.
