For this new episode I wanted to focus the selection on Spanish talent, music produced or published throughout the country. Being able to dedicate this modest space to musical projects and labels that I follow and admire, is more than pleasant and necessary for me. Consuming nearby talent, spreading it and helping it grow is a way of fostering a certain cultural sustainability, so necessary for all: consumers and producers.

Due to the commitment to the scene which I'm part of, sometimes also due to chance or simply just personal closeness, one meets artists and small projects, but with great potential, which are the ones with which oneself especially enjoys seeing them born, grow up, see them live or meet them in person, maybe collaborate in some way... All the music that appears in this program comes from those situations, so here I´m showing my respect and gratitude. "En busca de la sesión perdida de Cargocult" por Silly Europeans Feat. AMO. Un regalo sonoro para Miguel Agnes en su cuadragésimo cumpleaños.

Un viaje de busqueda a través de músicas y palabras que parte de la estridencia urbana para embarcarse en un vuelo introspectivo, culminando la travesía al atracar en tierras extrañas, donde los viejos cultos (lenguajes y bailes) abren las puertas a un nuevo momento.

Según la RAE, lo experimental puede definirse como: Aquello que tiende a la búsqueda de nuevas formas estéticas y de técnicas expresivas renovadoras. 

Pero... ¿Qué pasa cuando esas formas estéticas, y rompedoras a nuestro oídos, han estado ahí siempre? Esta es una cuestión que emerge de las escuchas, y sus comentarios, propuestas por nuestro invitado, Jose Luis Maire.

@j-l-maire aterriza en nuestro espacio sonoro cargado con un muestrario de músicas agrupadas por un tema muy concreto: la polifonía vocal a lo largo y ancho del planeta tierra. En este segundo capítulo recibimos a Juan Peralta, conocido como @diskoan, que nos envía una de sus características sesiones de escucha, esta vez un viaje musical basado en la novela de ciencia ficción Solaris, de Stanisław Lem. También accede a responder a un pequeño cuestionario donde nos explica los porqués de la sesión que envía y también nos ayuda a entender, de la mano de su entusiasmo y compromiso, la práctica de Dj tal y como él la concibe.

La sesión fue registrada en directo, en la actuación inmesiva audiovisual que el colectivo @calmamadrid realizó en la Escuela Municipal de Música y Danza María Dolores Pradera (Madrid), dentro de la programación del Festival Flipas 2021.

Happy to welcome Josephine' Soundscapes aka @machines-desirantes to our mix series! Jose Salas is an audiovisual creator and active cultural promoter in Madrid. As a DJ, or selector, he always works with a mixture of research from the past with a strong commitment to the present. He is currently part of the collectives a_mal_gam_a and CALMA, both working in the Spanish underground electronic scene. He also hosts a radio show called "Campos de Marte" on @radio-relativa, focused on experimentation in music.

This mix is a beautiful mixture of downtempo beats, acid synths and trippy melodies that builds up beautifully over 1h40. It's as he calls it, a "Machine Desirante" coming to life :)

"For this inaugural edition of Temple, another new adventure alongside Josephine, I approached the set in a natural way, with only a few secure tracks and others chosen from many I've selected over months but haven't played for one reason or another. Given the volume of music circulating nowadays, my premise is mostly not to repeat them, a manifestly failed attempt to give visibility to so many creative and talented agents.

Horizontal listening events are my favorites. If we add that they are among familiar and new faces, it is in these moments where we can unleash our imagination without complexes and in a comfortable environment. If, in addition, it is playing at home, as is the case at Espacio Perpendicular, the result is perfect.

The first reference I included was "Inducing The Pleasure Dreams V2," a live recording of Justo Bagüeste & Suso Saiz at Periferias in 2016, and from there, whatever could happen before and after. From Dalila to Charly García with "Yendo de la cama al living," both for the name and the mood, which is how I envisioned the event and how it turned out: bodies rested and affected by the sound. "Preparing the set for Temple was already special for me because I wasn't just thinking about what I wanted to do or communicate, as on other occasions, but how I could musically connect with Suso Saiz, whom I deeply admire. We decided not to talk beforehand and engage in an exercise of experimentation, presenting it with the trust generated by the event organizers, the other participating artists (also friends), and the attendees, among whom were also many friends. The result was magical; musically, we transitioned from the most subtle drones to moments that were even noisy, and it seemed like we all floated in a limbo that made the two hours fly by".

"Playing music at Temple was a real pleasure, thanks to the organizing crew, Espacio Perpendicular, and the attendees. A beautiful memory for those who were there, dancing and daydreaming. As the last DJ set of the event, my intention with the mix was to encourage swaying, static dancing. Just like in Telaraña, my show on Radio Relativa, I tried to harmonize classic sounds from the '90s like dub, downtempo, IDM... Inspired by the significant chill-out movement of that decade. Campos de Marte Especial Festival MOSTRA ♥ FW 23/24

Estás escuchando Campos de Marte en Radio Relativa y yo soy Josephine Soundscapes.

Este es un proyecto radiofónico dedicado a la investigación y el disfrute musical a partes iguales. 

Desde hace años vengo creando este espacio centrado en la experimentación musical desde diferentes puntos de vista, a través de monográficos, de entrevistas o Dj sets y también de programas especiales como este que estás escuchando, dedicado íntegramente  al festival MOSTRA, que celebrará su tercera edición entre los próximos 28 y 31 de marzo, en Barcelona.

Acompáñame en esta escucha donde a través de las narraciones de los protagonistas del festival: el público, los artistas y también gente de la organización, profundizamos en el evento y damos las claves de por qué este festival pequeño y novel, es una alternativa más que interesante para un público amante de la música, pues en él confluyen experimentación, fiesta y compromiso, creando un espacio temporal único.

Last Saturday, 05/25, I had the opportunity to develop one of my DJ sets called 'Vanishing Point, music to fade away', within the installation 'Round Sky and Square Earth (天圆地⽅)' in front of an attentive audience, given over to listening. The installation that puts the work of Yu Depeng and Lucía Loren in dialogue, curated by Mateo Feijóo, with the participation of the collective Habitar el Esparto and Josephine’ Soundscapes.

Starting from the singularity of traditional Chinese thought as an alternative for social and environmental sustainability, which Yu Depeng proposes, Mateo Feijóo imagines a collage in which several views are superimposed.

The proposal enters into dialogue with the Clima Fitness installation, which currently occupies the Intermediae space, to imagine an ancestral gym where to experience collaboration networks based on social and environmental sustainability.

Josephine’ Soundscapes es Jose Salas, creador audiovisual y promotor de la cultura alternativa en Madrid, en activo desde hace 2 décadas. En el ámbito musical trabaja como Dj, radio host, promotor y programador en clubes e instituciones, así como en proyectos de radio y colaboraciones de diversa índole.
Actualmente, parte su trabajo se materializa desde la promotora independiente a_mal_gam_a, que codirige junto a Diskoan, desde la que desarrolla iniciativas como Dance Cave Madrid. Su radio de acción se expande formando parte de otros proyectos culturales, colectivos o personales, como CALMA en Zapadores Ciudad del Arte, temple @ Espacio Perpedicular, Festival BetaPública de Teatros de Canal, las sesiones Vanishing Point o Campos de Marte @ Radio Relativa, su podcast dedicado a la música experimental.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically during the mobility restrictions caused by the lockdown, when we all made the effort to stay put, the widespread initiative of #StayAtHome emerged from various sectors of society. On our end, the CALMA collective, of which I was a part, decided to offer our community of listeners the chance to enjoy our proposal from their own homes. This gave birth to the Stay in CALMA project: audiovisual sessions available for download so that everyone could create their own “Listening Chamber” at home.

Josephine’s Soundscapes es el alias de Jose Salas, creador y realizador audiovisual, director de arte y promotor de la cultura alternativa en Madrid. Continuum: a coherent whole characterized as a collection, sequence, or progression of values or elements varying by minute degrees.

We take off to continue our voyage joining the dots of The Continuum, and this was the time our mission gave in to the pull of a force that, since day one, has been beeping in our sonic radar and marked as a ‘not to miss’. We explore total outlandish territory here with a unique selector that challenges genres, labels, and preconceptions. We salute Josephine’ Soundscapes.

Josephine’ Soundscapes is the moniker of Jose Salas, an audiovisual creator, art director, and active promoter of alternative culture in Madrid. When it comes to music, he has been an active participant in shaping Madrid’s underground electronic music scene for over 20 years. Founder and collaborator of many musical and cultural projects over the years, his current ones include Campos de Marte, an expanded radio project dedicated to experimental music, and the curation of Temple, a series of listening sessions at Espacio Perpendicular.

And that would be an “official” glimpse at his resume. But the gravity magnet of Josephine’s musical choices gets out the personal in me.

And CHOICES here is the word. Because what makes Jose’s sound impossibly unique is his brave choices. Placing himself in the crossroads of experimental, ambient, avant-garde and electronics is not a chance. His landing space has enabled him to explore, what I believe, is his superpower: a keen eye for mega-bold selections. He embodies the concept of “the sound you didn’t know you needed” and does so to an extreme. I have never heard stylistic picks like his ones, but the resulting collage often conveys a similar something: anachronistic sounds that bring psychedelia of past times. A touch of absurdism. Contemporary WTF-ism. A mastery of the surreal. And, having been lucky enough to attend to a couple of his in-person rituals, his takes always blow minds, make audience connect with each other, smile in joyous disbelief, and ask “are we really listening to this, right now, and works so well?”. 

What we present today for the next chapter in The Continuum is the re-recording of his set for a dreamy event put together by Mostra and Introspective Electronics in London. A special selection focusing on women, as the event took place on the 8th of March. Get ready for a take on psychedelia like you have never heard before. And welcome to a musical world not bound by space or time, where anything and everything can fit, and where the master selector will pick the most unexpected. Welcome to Josephine’ Soundscapes.

"En este mix rindo homenaje —por enésima vez— al IDM de los 90, también conocido entonces como electronic listening music, leftfield electronica o braindance.
Para mí, esta música de los 90 se caracteriza por producciones ricas en capas y matices estimulantes, con sonoridades jugosas, ritmos intrincados, todo sostenido por estructuras melódicas evocadoras.
Piezas largas para sumergirse y viajar con una visión sugerente y hedonista del futuro — que era, al mismo tiempo, el presente — con una tensión compositiva de euforia contenida y alegría latente, siempre a punto de despegar hacia el éxtasis.
Es evidente la influencia que este amplio movimiento de los 90 ha tenido en la producción y percepción de la música electrónica. Aunque debo decir que mi fascinación viene sobre todo de lo personal: fue la banda sonora de un momento inolvidable de emergencia y descubrimiento, en muchos sentidos, durante mi juventud ".

The era is defined by productions rich in layers and stimulating nuances, featuring lush sonic textures, intricate rhythms, and evocative melodic structures. These are extended tracks intended for deep immersion and inner journeys, often guided by a suggestive and hedonistic vision of the future — which, at the time, was also the present — . The music carries a compositional tension marked by restrained euphoria and latent joy, always on the verge of breaking into ecstasy.

Los silly europeans se plantaron en Bartleby & Co. la librería y biblioteca y epicentro hispanohablante más alternativo de Berlín, con la sana intención de escudriñar en su historia y actividades.

Podréis escuchar a Adrian de Alfonso y compañía, desgranar el asunto. A Gene y Antón Lamazares, que pasaban por allí, contarnos quiénes son. A Maie Escorial y Minerva Burroni contarnos cosas sobre Berlin Amateurs y el mundo de la comunicación alemán. Y por último a Marta Bassols, que nos explica el ciclo de cine disidente que lugar en la librería. Entre sus películas, "Corridas de Alegría", un incunable del cine kinky más auténtico y menos conocido del genio Gonzalo Garcia Pelayo, con el que los asistentes al festival tuvimos la oportunidad de charlar vía Skype, aquí la prueba sonora. Lujo, Luxus.

La música y los interludios son fragmentos de "Margarita y el lobo" (1969), el mediometraje musical de Cecilia Bartolomé, feminista, rompedor y cercano al situacionismo, quemado literalmente por la censura franquista. Este ejercicio de fin de carreara, de esta cineasta silenciada, se pudo ver en el mencionado ciclo "El amor fuera de sus casillas. Dissident Spanish Film Festival at Bartleby & Co." comisariado por Marta Bassols en Bartleby.

Campos de Marte - 2nd Show - w/ F.A.N.G.O. (Ezequiel Fanego)

Josephine’s Soundscapes is the moniker of Jose Salas, an audiovisual creator, art director, and active promoter of alternative culture in Madrid. When it comes to music, he has been an active participant in shaping Madrid’s underground electronic music scene for over 20 years. In recent years, he has founded and worked as artistic director, promoter, and DJ in club nights and platforms such as Paraíso Madrid, CALMA, and the independent creative cell a_mal_gam_a (Dance Cave; Avalovara, Listening Club; L’art Dance Club @ ARCO; and Festival En Pausa @ La Casa Encendida).

His work has continually evolved across a variety of cultural projects, both collective and personal. These include his seminal podcast Silly Europeans (2010–2016), his program Sonda Dispersa on Madrid’s public radio station M21, and his current projects such as Campos de Marte on Radio Relativa—a podcast dedicated to experimental music—and the curation of temple, the listening sessions at Espacio Perpendicular.
