Dante's “Divina Commedia” overturns the mythical figure of Odysseus: for millennia we have been told that his ultimate intention was the restoration of an idyllic “status quo”, which was worth ten years of tribulations. Dante's hero, instead, never comes back home: in his famous speech he persuades his companions to turn away from their land (and loved ones) and venture into the unknown, for the sake of virtue and knowledge. The words expressing his resolution are: “But I put forth on the high open sea”.
